About the Manufacturer

Originally produced in the first half of the 19th Century, mechanical carriage clocks roused the imagination of the very best of the early horologists. From the simplest of styles to elegant and elaborate casework, designs have remained faithful over the years and are, today, beautifully recaptured by David Peterson Clocks of Reading. Initially started as Weiss Clocks Limited in the 1970’s, its founder Peter Weiss, faithfully reproduced the original French designs, adding several new designs of his own, including the manufacture of quartz battery clocks, innovative for that period, but now commonplace! WCL created quality solid brass clocks using some of the traditional manufacturing methods of the early pioneering clockmakers. Designs carried the original French clock names such as ‘Obis’, ‘Boite’, ‘Doucine’ and even the ‘Anglais’, which was specifically designed for the tastes of the English market. From its factory in Reading, Weiss Clocks produced many thousands of clocks using the name ‘Weiss’ on quartz models and ‘David Peterson’ on the more expensive mechanical 8-day models (so called because one full wind of the mainspring would last 8 days). In 1996, Weiss Clocks restructured and was renamed as David Peterson Clocks. The newly formed company moved to new factory premises but still continued to produce the same high quality and excellent finish clocks that it had always made before. Today, the business is run by Peter's son David, after Peter, in his 80’s and semi retired, passed away in March 2008. Our clocks are now made under license in the Far East and decades of experience in clock making have proved invaluable in ensuring that the quality and reliability, so expected of our clocks, is maintained. Buying a clock from David Peterson Clocks really is buying an “Heirloom of the Future!”
