What Is Silk?

Silk is a natural fibre that's known for being soft and sumptuous, as well as strong and durable. Silk is made primarily of fibroin - a protein made from the fibres that caterpillars create when they spin their cocoons.

Silk uses a momme count to measure the density of the fabric. The higher the momme weight means the more durable and luxe. Silk with a higher momme count is not only more luxury feeling but is also suitable for heavy-duty use. When searching for your next silk pillowcase, you can find the momme count in the specifications tab to ensure it is the desired count.

So why use a silk pillowcase? Below, we've listed the most popular benefits to using a silk pillowcase...

Benefits of a Silk Pillowcase

Smoother Skin

The smooth surface of a silk pillowcase causes less friction and tugging on your skin than a cotton pillowcase. Over time, cotton pillowcases can result in wrinkles, especially if you sleep on your side or stomach. If you find yourself tossing and turning often, a silk pillowcase is a great option for you.

Less Frizz

Another benefit of silk pillowcases is less friction on your hair, which means less tangles and frizz in the morning. Silk pillowcases can help keep your over-night hairstyles like curls, braids or blow drys, looking like new for longer periods of time.

If you have naturally curly hair that is prone to breakage, a silk pillowcase will help your hair retain moisture without causing unwanted tangles.

Avoids Dry Skin

Silk is less likely to absorb moisture from your skin than cotton. This makes a silk pillowcase a great option during the dry, colder months or for anyone who finds themselves with parched skin.

A Luxurious Look

If you're looking to add a touch of luxury to your bedroom, consider adding a silk pillowcase to your bed. Not only does it give off a premium shine, it's also incredibly durable and long-lasting. Paired with the perfect-fitting pillow, you'll be sure to get all the beauty sleep you need.

Tip: Elevate the feel of luxury by adding your favourite scent. Before you sleep, take time to unwind by filling you bedroom with the aroma of a scented candle or oil diffuser. Our guide, Find Your Signature Style and Scent With Home Candles will help you determine which scent is perfect for you.

A Cleaner Surface

Silk pillowcases offer a cleaner surface for you to lay down at night. Some materials like cotton, can soak up oils, moisture and even bacteria from your face and hair. The more you sleep on the pillowcase, the more the bacteria, dirt and oils can accumulate. The protein fibre in silk allows it to absorb less than cotton or linen but should still be cleaned on a regular basis. Create an ideal sleeping environment for your skin by choosing a silk pillowcase.

How to Wash a Silk Pillowcase

Unlike most standard cotton or synthetic pillowcases, silk pillowcases require a bit more care with washing. Ideally, its best to wash silk pillowcases in cold water - so make sure to set your washing machine temperature to no more than 30 degrees. Using bleach can harm the silk fabric and cause it to discolour. Fabric softener is also an unnecessary step as using fabric softeners will only leave an unwelcome residue on the fabric.

If possible, try hand-washing your silk pillowcases in cold water. Remember to gently move the fabric once submerged in the water with your hands, avoiding any rubbing or scrubbing as this will do more harm than good.

Silk vs. Satin

Satin pillowcases have that glossy sleek surface that resembles silk. While it’s feeling is familiar, satin is a type of weaving technique while silk is a type of fabric. Today, satin can be made from silk as well as other fabrics like synthetic fibres which gives the fabric more flexibility than silk. Satin pillowcases are soft and smooth, making movements on the pillow include less rubbing of the skin or hair against the pillowcase.
