Everything to Know About Wayfair Verified
Let’s go deep on what makes Wayfair Verified your shortcut to the good stuff.
What Makes Wayfair Verified Your Shortcut to the Good Stuff?
To put it simply, we did the homework so that you don’t have to. Wayfair Verified items are hand-vetted for quality and value by our product specialists, using a 10-point inspection.
Our product specialists go through each product category and identify items that meet key quality criteria. Then, we get up close and personal with every single one of them. Only 1% of items on Wayfair earn the Wayfair Verified stamp of approval.
Not only does this rigorous process save you time and effort, but it also means that no matter your budget, you can always find a quality item that is a great value for its price.
Meet Our Product Specialists
Our in-house product specialists have deep expertise in their assigned categories. They are well versed on what is available in the marketplace, gathering those insights from supplier relationships, tradeshows, and competitor research.
Because of their industry knowledge, they are uniquely qualified to vet products by hand using our 10-point inspection. And as home shoppers themselves, they understand how it feels to experience these products as customers.
How We Verify Products
Every Wayfair Verified item earns its stamp of approval through a three-step process:
1. Pre-Inspection
Using product data, we curate items across every category from our most trusted vendors. These products must be highly rated by customers, have low return and incident rates, and meet key quality criteria. The short-listed items are then brought to our furniture lab for a hands-on inspection.
2. Inspection
Our product specialists personally hand-inspect every potential Verified item. First, they unbox the item, set a timer, and start assembling. (This is how we determine how easy or challenging it is to put something together!) Then, they complete the remainder of 10-point inspection to vet for quality of materials, functionality, and enhanced features.
Depending on the furniture category, this inspection could include sit tests for comfort, spilling liquids on performance fabrics, pulling drawers in and out, experimenting with “smart” tech integrations, and more. Essentially, they use the product as someone might in real life.
3. Value Check
If an item passes inspection, we compare its price against similar items in the market to ensure it’s a great buy. Only then will an item receive the Wayfair Verified stamp of approval.
What We Look for in Our 10-Point Inspection
When assessing and inspecting Verified items, we group the 10 inspection points into: prerequisites, assembly, core quality criteria, functionality, and value.
As mentioned above, some criteria are reviewed before the products even make it to our furniture lab:
PREREQUISITES
1. Customer Reviews
Products must be rated above average within their class to be eligible for verification. This ensures that the item consistently delivers on expectations for quality and performance.
2. Return & Incident Rates
We look at how often items are returned or reported with issues. To qualify, products must have a return rate that is lower than the class average, signaling strong customer satisfaction and dependable performance.
Once an item makes it to our inspection site, we begin inspecting for the qualities below:
ASSEMBLY
3. Ease of Assembly
We know that a great product experience starts from the moment it arrives. To ensure the process is simple and frustration-free, we aim to select items that have an assembly time of less than an hour (and many Verified items arrive fully assembled). You can expect most major components to be prebuilt, requiring only minimal setup – like attaching legs, arms, and handles or sliding pieces together. For items that do take over one hour, we consider them a great value despite the effort.
CORE QUALITY CRITERIA
4. Primary & Secondary Materials
Every Wayfair Verified item is evaluated for the quality and artisanship of both its primary and secondary materials.
Primary Materials
These form the foundation or structure of the product – its core material.
- For furniture (like dining tables or beds), we look for premium materials known for their strength and durability, like solid hardwood, stainless steel, or marble. When engineered materials are used, we confirm they are high quality, ensuring you are getting great value.
- We also consider where and how the product will be used. For example, a bathroom storage cabinet must be crafted from materials that can withstand moisture so that it remains functional, durable, and beautiful even in high-humidity environments.
- For nonfurniture items, such as decor and lighting, we look for materials that reflect artisanship or are high-quality (i.e., hand-crafted materials and natural materials like marble, handblown glass, travertine, cotton, linen, silk).
Secondary Materials
These are the finishing touches that contribute to both appearance and performance. Examples include: upholstery fabrics, fill materials, stains or veneers, and decorative hardware such as knobs and handles. We look for genuine, high-quality finishes – natural fibers, genuine leather, real wood veneer, and durable, high-end hardware – to ensure the product stands up to everyday use.
5. Construction
When we assess a product's construction, we’re looking at how a piece is built – from its frame and joinery to the finer finishing details. These elements determine how a product looks as well as how a product will hold up over time.
We verify that:
- Frames are solid and stable, made from quality hardwoods or other durable materials – not low-grade composites – so they resist warping, cracking, and shifting over time.
- Joinery methods use trusted techniques such as mortise and tenon, doweling, quality hardware, or interlocking frames. These methods provide structural integrity and help ensure stability.
- Fastenings and reinforcements are secure, with frames that are often both glued and screwed together for added strength and reliability.
- Finishing details – including stitching, veneers, stains, and edges – are clean, even, and polished with no visible cracks or misalignments. We also look to see if joining hardware is concealed for an extra-polished look.
6. Durability
We prioritize products that are built to withstand daily use and a variety of home environments. For example:
- We give preference to materials that are scratch-, stain-, moisture-, and heat-resistant.
- Seating must have an indicated weight capacity of at least 250 pounds to be eligible for verification.
FUNCTIONALITY
7. Ease of Use
We test each product to ensure all mechanisms function properly. All moving parts – like drawers, doors, and adjustable components – must operate smoothly and securely. For example:
- Drawer slides should open and close seamlessly.
- Knobs, handles, and hinges must feel stable and be properly aligned.
- Adjustable pieces, such as tilting patio umbrellas or reclining mechanisms, should move easily without sticking or resistance.
8. Ease of Care
We select products that are easy to clean and maintain, looking for traits like stain-resistance, sun-resistance, and ability to be washed. Performance materials, like smudge-proof finishes, washable covers, and moisture-resistant coatings, are prioritized wherever possible.
9. Enhanced Features
We also look for thoughtful enhancements that elevate everyday experiences. These are the details that add convenience and functionality or go beyond the basics. Examples include:
- Smart integrations like USB charging ports or color adjustable- or Wi-Fi -enabled lighting.
- Programmable or customizable settings such as power-reclining sofas or coffee machines with autoshutoff.
- Multifunctional designs such as hidden storage, modular layouts, or convertible features.
- Soft-close drawers and doors, which close smoothly and silently without slamming.
VALUE
10. Market-Tested Value
Finally, before earning the Verified stamp of approval, we price check each product against items of similar quality and features. So no matter your budget, you can rest easy that you’re getting best-in-class value for the price point – without having to comparison shop.
