What is the Standard Bench Height? And Other Useful Dimensions to Know
Learn if a bench will fit properly in your space.
There's nothing worse than finding the perfect indoor bench and then realising it's too small. Our guide is here to help you understand bench dimensions, including standard bench height, width and more, so that you can get it right on the first try.
Need to Know: Bench Dimensions
The following are standard bench dimensions. Use the image below to ensure you are measuring correctly.
What is the Standard Bench Height?
The standard bench height is 45 – 50cm. This height is suitable for a bench at a dining room table. Note that bench height refers to the distance from the seat to the ground.
What is the Standard Bench Depth?
The standard bench depth is between 38cm and 50cm. A dining room bench tends to fall around 44cm deep. A bench that is deeper than 50cm might cause discomfort when sitting.
What is the Standard Bench Width?
The standard bench width is between 106cm and 152cm and depends on the number of people you are looking to seat. For reference, a 106 – 132cm bench can accommodate two adults comfortably. A bench between 134cm and 203cm wide is typically for three adults, and a bench more than 203cm wide tends to accommodate four. Read a product's specifications to determine its exact seating capacity.
Measuring for a Bench in Your Home
Here are some important tips to keep in mind when measuring for a bench.
Clearance: Make sure there is enough space between your bench and other objects in the room. If your bench will serve as table seating, there should be at least 121cm of clearance between the table and any walls or furniture. This will leave enough space for you to completely pull the bench out from the table without bumping into anything. If your bench sits against a wall or bed, leave at least 92cm of clearance between the bench and any other items. Every space is different, so be sure to measure your room's unique layout.
Table Height: An average table is between 71cm and 76cm high, with a standard height of 76cm. A standard bench height of 45cm will fit comfortably with a table of this size. If your table is taller or shorter, adjust your bench height to accommodate this change. We recommend allowing for 30cm of space between the seat and the bottom of the table.
