How to Transform Your Garden with a Staycation-Style Makeover

With many of us swapping our travels abroad for a simple summer at home, tending to your outdoor space has never been more important. The good news is that you don’t need a perfectly landscaped garden to create an inspiring al fresco oasis. Here Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, shares how we turned a neglected communal garden into a staycation haven.
Take the Plunge
Desperate to enjoy the great outdoors, but only have an overgrown yard at your disposal? Don’t be defeated! Setting aside just a few hours to cut back any overgrown ivy and reclaim your space can be all it takes to unveil a setting with great potential. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, draft in the professionals for a few hours to trim back overgrown plants and do a little light landscaping. Splitting the cost with tenants in the building should make the work surprisingly affordable.
Style Underfoot
Feeling that the foundations of your space are a little uninspiring? While turf is an expensive option that requires love and maintenance, mulch won’t break the bank and creates a fine foundation. You can then go wild with area rugs, which are perfect for demarcating your space, look stylish and can be picked up in a huge array of styles, sizes and outdoor finishes, easily and affordably.
In the Zone
It pays to think about leisure uses when you’re designing your space. A comfortable place to kick-back, a beautifully styled dining area and a clear kids zone will ensure that you’re set up for a great staycation. Once you’ve uncovered your blank canvas, creating some beautiful vignettes is the fun part, but don’t be afraid to take your time. If you’re on a tight budget you can go slow, designing and installing one space at a time.
Time for Best
Your best crockery and glassware isn't just for indoor-use. Even if your garden is less than perfect, rolling out your best cutlery, dinner sets, finest glassware and adding a vase of beautiful blooms will make your setting feel special. Make the most of every dining experience, whether it’s a mid-morning brunch al fresco or a plush evening meal as this guarantee to get those holiday vibes flowing.
Mediterranean Flair
Pining for sunnier destinations? Consider your favourite far flung hot-spots when designing your space. A geometric rug in bold blue will bring a distinctive touch of Mediterranean style home. While dream-catchers and laid-back linen covered furniture will bring a chic, summer vibe reminiscent of Ibiza.

Play Time
Let’s face it, dreamy downtime can feel somewhat challenging when you’ve got your children to think about. Keep your little nippers occupied by prepping the perfect playzone for them. A charming teepee will bring a touch of boho flair to your space whilst also creating a chillout zone for them to wind down in later. A perfectly prepped sandpit and a stash of garden toys, should hopefully keep them occupied for hours. Now, did someone say cocktails?
Stow in Style
If you don't have available space for a garden shed, invest in a garden storage box instead. The ideal place to stash cushions, blankets, toys and even dinnerware, which can then be whipped out effortlessly whenever you need them.
Of course plants play a key role in any garden makeover, but if you're finding that your outdoor haven lacks a little greenery or your existing plants look a little lackluster, don't panic! A few affordable and fabulously faux plants will help transform your average lawn into something lush.
Nice and Neighbourly
Looking to embrace a little community spirit? A simple chalkboard will allow you to leave little notes for your neighbours, from motivational quotes to easy instructions on how to take care of the space. A vertical garden packed with herbs and plants makes for a great community project, even if you’re a little less than green fingered.
