Get your bathroom in check.

Carrying out a bathroom redesign can be exciting but there's a lot to keep in mind before you begin ripping out fixtures. We'll equip you with everything you need to plan your big project, down to a bathroom remodel checklist to keep you organised.

Planning a Bathroom Remodel

Step 1: Figure Out the Bathroom Renovation Cost

The first thing you'll want to consider while planning a bathroom remodel is cost. Sit down and determine how much you can allocate toward the desired project. This will organically guide you to which type of remodel you'll want to complete. There are several factors that will influence the cost of your bathroom renovation:

Will you be able to complete the renovation work yourself, or will you need to hire help? Paying someone else to do the labor, such as a contractor, will substantially increase the cost of your remodel.

Are you planning on minor cosmetic work or a gut rehab? Cosmetic updates, such as changing out tile and fixtures, cost far less than new electrical work and plumbing.

Step 2: Find Inspiration

When you're planning a bathroom remodel, Pinterest or another mood board can be a fantastic resource for ideas. Create a mood board, saving your favourite tiling, fixtures and layouts. You'll want to go back to those inspiration photos as you start picking out the exact items you want to buy.

Tip: If you're thinking about a mid-century modern bathroom redesign, you'll want to look for images featuring large black hex tiles, floating cabinetry and modern lighting fixtures.

Step 3: Consult a Contractor

If you decide to have a contractor take on a complete bathroom renovation for you, we recommend having two to three different estimates for the work. You can find contractors in your own network. Ask your friends and family for referrals or check local community groups where people in your neighborhood can make recommendations for contractors.

Once you've narrowed down your choices, meet with the potential contractors to walk through your bathroom remodel. It’s ok to ask them for referrals from previous clients and examples of their work. When getting an estimate for work, ask them to itemise estimated costs for plumbing, electrical work, labour and materials.

Before proceeding with a contractor, have them draft up contract for you to review and sign. This helps to clearly lay out communication about the project. You’ll want to be clear on:

  • Payment Structure: Work out payment structure ahead of time. It is normal to pay up to 50% of your budget up front to help with materials. It’s important to note in your contract if you (the homeowner) or your contractor will be in charge of purchasing materials. Discuss acceptable payment methods (cash, cheque or card).

  • Timeline: Estimate the project length from beginning to end. This should be clearly stated in the contract, especially if you are working under a deadline.

  • Materials: Have your contractor outline necessary materials to purchase. If you (the homeowner) will be purchasing materials used for the project, have them draft a timeline for when you need to purchase each item. Keep in mind, plumbing and electrical work are installed first.

Step 4: Go Over Your Bathroom Remodel Checklist
