Inspired to Make Your House a ‘Home’?

Scroll through the whole list below to see which of the top 5 home ideas you can use in your own space to transform your house into ‘Home’!

1. Tell Your Story with Accessories

In our survey, 45% of people said that ‘redecorating’ is the first thing they need to do in order to make their new house into a home—and we agree! Adding your treasured bits and bobs into a new space can mean all the difference between a sterile scene and a homey haven.

Our tip: Bring your favourite finds to life! Collecting postcards, old photographs or concert ticket stubs? Try creating a fun collage or framing your most treasured keepsakes for a touch of personal flair. Remember, your home is telling your story; it should be curated by you and never rushed.

2. Keep it Cosy with Colour & Textiles

When some people think of home, they picture a soft, warm place to cuddle up with a loved one, good book or movie marathon. 23% of people from our survey agreed that ‘Comfort’ is the best word to describe ‘Home’. Creating a comfort cocoon in your own place can provide a much needed escape from the daily hustle and bustle.

Our tip: Infusing your space with warmer hues will help bring that welcoming feeling all year ‘round, while curling up in plush, oversized throws and blankets can melt away any winter blues during colder months. Rugs are also a great way to absorb sound and insulate your space.

3. Pick Your Perfect Statement Pieces

Finding your perfect statement pieces are a must for any homely abode. The public would agree, with a shocking 71% of responses from our survey noting that the sofa is the most important item in their home! Not only should your main pieces be eye-catching, but keep in mind that they should also be comfortable and sturdy to be sure they’ll last for years to come.

Our tip: Instead of trying to match all of your large-scale items, pick up pieces of different styles and materials, but in complementary colour schemes. This will give any room eclectic flair and instantly adds personality to your interiors.

4. Illuminate Your Interiors

The right light can bring effortless elegance into any home and create a comforting glow that changes throughout the day. If you’re greeted with the atmosphere of a surgical room after a long day at the office, it may be harder to shed daily stresses and truly unwind.

Our tip: Knowing which lighting works best in your particular space is key, so researching how to make the most of windows and lamps can transform your pad from ‘ho-hum’ to ‘heavenly’! Want to know more? You can find your ideal lighting scheme by reading our Light Bulb Buying Guide, too!

5. Keep Only What You Love

When finding items to display, keep what makes you happy and store or toss anything that doesn’t. Creating your ideal space is all about surrounding yourself with what you love and we’re all for making more room in your space for the things that truly matter to you!

Our tip: Go through your possessions and get rid of anything you haven’t used in the past year or give away items that no longer tickle your fancy. This will help clear your space for your most prized picks. Donating to a charity shop is always a great start!

The Bottom Line

When it comes down to it, creating a space that’s truly ‘Home’ is all about how you feel in the space, which our survey confirmed for us! It’s a topic close to the hearts of many people and even our Wayfair Head of Europe said:

"...it’s warming to see how people smile when they describe their homes and their favourite items. ‘Home’ is an emotive subject and something we all cherish deeply."
Martin Reiter

When transforming your house into your perfect place to call ‘Home’, keep in mind that achieving a ‘show-home’ look is less important than cultivating a sanctuary where you can unwind, be yourself and most importantly, have fun!
