5 Ways to Transform Your Bedroom into a Mindful Sanctuary
Inviting a sense of calm and serenity into your favourite room.
It's the last place you see at night and the first place you wake up to in the morning, so why not transform your bedroom from cluttered and chaotic into a relaxing and refreshing sanctuary. Wayfair’s resident Style Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, explains just how.
Sleep Inducing Hues
Our bedrooms are one of our most sacred downtime spaces, yet they're often overlooked and not conducive to relaxation or a good night’s sleep. If you’re eager to get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house, prioritise your bedroom as your main point of escape and make sure that it’s styled with serenity in mind. Soothing pastel hues promote relaxation and recalibration and can be easily introduced through budget-friendly duvet covers and soft textiles, or upgrade any unloved wooden furniture with sample paint pots for a calming DIY task.
Smartphones and your bedroom are anything but an ideal match - with blue light keeping us wired, as well as the constant access to news updates, it’s no wonder we're feeling the stress of being constantly connected to the world around us. Start by implementing a ‘no phone zone’ and then stretch this rule to all bedroom tech, eliminating everything from those late night Netflix binges to jarring early morning alarms. Swap your scroll time for a brief 15 minute meditation to transform your mind-set and reframe your bedroom as a digital detox sanctuary.
Natural Elements
Artificial lighting is commonplace in the modern home and the bedroom is no exception. Stark white light can be head-ache inducing and confuse the time of day - natural sunlight is the most replenishing solution for a dimly-lit boudoir. Switch out heavy curtains for adaptable blinds and shutters, to allow you to change the lighting to fit your mood. Again, when choosing lighting, opt for warm yellow bulbs and try table lamps to create an ambient glow.
Try to avoid using your bedroom as a dumping ground for paraphernalia from the rest of the house. Keeping your furniture and decor streamlined, as well as avoiding the build up of clutter, will help you to feel more zen.
Air Quality is Key
The air quality in your bedroom can really affect your sleep and overall state of mind. Take a step closer to achieving a healthier bedroom by purifying the air of any nasty pollutants. Swing open your windows, introduce an air purifier or bring in houseplants as simple these elements can really help to cleanse your home, allowing you to breathe easy.
