How to Restyle a Fun but Practical Kid's Room
Wild & Grizzly shares her tips from the Back to School bedroom revamp
As a mother of one with a creative background, mummy and lifestyle blogger Wild & Grizzly knows a thing or two about balancing style and practicality. Stepping outside of the seriousness of parenting, she explores the wild side of motherhood while displaying her love for design - being sure to document every joyous moment along the way. After teaming up to revamp her little one’s bedroom, she shares here her tips from the Back to School bedroom revamp.
Pick a purpose
For any room restyle, the first thing you should consider is the room's purpose. Are you looking to create more of a playroom or study space? Once you have an idea of that, then you should sit and discuss ideas with your child. Not only is it a fun bonding experience, but you'll be surprised by how cool their ideas are. Felix wanted to create something adventurous and I kept that in mind when coming up with a scheme for his room.
Look ahead
When picking out products, think long term. How will items be used now, in a few months and next year? I hate waste, so everything we chose has to be able to look good, have a fun element and transition to the rest of the home if necessary.
Colour me happy
Pick a colour palatte, this should create a cohesive look and make it easier to appear tidy and uniformed, especially in a kid's space.
Mood board must-have
Use Pinterest to create mood boards or if shopping on Wayfair, create an Ideas board which will allow you to save your product picks.
Smart storage
We decluttered Felix's room before his makeover, appraising which items needed to be binned because they were broken, vs items that could be donated or reused. If you have pieces of furniture you want to replace, then try listing them on eBay to get some cash for your unwanted pieces and give you a little extra budget for the room makeover. We also used baskets for toys, separating them into groups such as super heroes, lego, building blocks and cars. This makes it easier to find toys and also tidy them away.
Balance basics
Assess whether items are both fun and practical. When creating a kid's space, there needs to be a good balance of both. We wanted to make a space that still felt like a fun kid's bedroom, but also could be used for school work and would grow with Felix as he gets older.
