To help you make the most out of the warm weather, Lauren Mahon has teamed up with Wayfair to show you how to turn your outdoor area into a relaxing retreat. A place full of calm energy can improve your overall well-being, or as Lauren put it "having somewhere to come outside just calmes me and centers me".
Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, reveals how Lauren achieved her zen look:
Happy Place
Having a corner of your home that’s devoted to wellbeing is a wonderful way to signal that you are in true relaxation mode. Lauren’s petite patio offered the perfect patch for a zen corner where she can enjoy some downtime with friends and family, away from her hectic schedule as an activist and broadcaster.
Size matters
An area for relaxing and entertaining was at the top of Lauren’s wish list, but space was at a premium! Lauren boxed clever with an integrated timber bench that runs around her fencing perimeter - a fantastic way to maximise on seating. A slim dining table, chic bistro-style metal garden chairs and comfy cushions in tonal greens and neutrals help to round off the look. We also added a lounger and separate seating area for Lauren to enjoy her morning java in peace!
Mirror mirror
Looking glasses aren’t just for the mantelpiece! In Lauren’s yard, a pair of standing mirrors add the impression of extra space and dimension, whilst also acting as a strong decorative feature
Unexpected details
Lauren’s patio may be small but it’s packed full of personality. A wall-mounted garden clock, an arrangement of decorative antlers and plant pots maximise use of the simple brick backdrop, turning a typically featureless space into an area of intrigue.
Plant power
Nothing adds a sense of wellness and restorative calm than a diverse selection of glorious greenery. Lauren opted for a verdant mix of trailing plants, fragrant potted herbs, low maintenance faux succulents and staggered pots of bold yellow calendulas to bring all the joy to her happy alfresco spot.
Day to night
To make her patio a go-to for sunny days and cosy evenings alike, festoon lights were strung around the fence perimeter. We also added a chiminea, a simple garden rug and textured throws to make the space snug and super inviting.
