Presenter, paralympic medallist and author, Ade Adepitan MBE, teamed up with Wayfair to create a family friendly outdoor oasis, now his ‘favourite room in the house’.

Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, shares advice on how Ade & wife Linda achieved the look:

Zone in

Outdoor space

After transforming the garden from a ‘muddy BMX track’, the pair have reimagined the space into an expansive green space, perfect for unwinding, relaxing and hosting family and friends. One of the best ways to make the most of a larger outdoor space is to make clear zones. Use patio areas for table and chairs sets, creating a dedicated dining set up for breakfast, lunch or dinner al fresco. A pergola is the ideal place to position hanging seating or lounge sets. A large outdoor rug will not only add a stylish layer to the overall aesthetic, but will help to visually define an area.

Colour pop

Colour pop

Grounded in the colours of nature, with pale wood, calming grey and sandy stone, Ade and Linda’s outdoor furniture is immersed against a lush green lawn. You can quickly brighten up a space with bold pops of colour and soft furnishings are a brilliant way to do this. A selection of patterned cushions scattered on outdoor seating make it even more inviting – it’s one of the quickest ways to transform seating inside and out.

Blending indoors and out

Blending indoors and out

Gone are the days of purely practical garden furniture design, with contemporary cutting-edge styles that would look just as good inside your home. The large dining set Ade & Linda chose offers versatility, with a built-in firepit to extend the time outside, keeping guests warm after the sun goes down. Designed for maximum comfort, an investment piece will stand the test of time, giving your garden an instant luxe feel.

Cocktail hour

Staying in is the new going out, as entertaining at home becomes a popular choice for spending time with friends and family. "Even though the lockdown ended a while ago, we still have lots of friends we haven’t seen since before the pandemic, so I think we’ll be having lots of little BBQs on the weekends to make up for lost time" explained Ade to us while we visited him. Introducing a garden bar is a brilliant way to add a fun feature to your outdoor space, providing an interactive element to serve al fresco cocktails and summer drinks from. Ideal for hosts that love the entertain, if you don’t have space for a freestanding set, then a portable bar cart on wheels is a good alternative.

Practical playtime

Our gardens are multi-functional spaces, used for everything from outdoor cooking, hosting playdates to drying laundry. The addition of the children’s table with built in sandpit means that Bolla can enjoy messy play, but it can also be easily hidden away and used for garden picnics. Including dual purpose pieces gives more reasons to spend time together outside enjoying the garden.
