The Art of Layering Rugs Like a Pro

Start with Neutrals
One of the easiest ways to introduce layered rugs into your home is to start with a neutral base. Opt for a jute & sisal rug style as these types of rugs are versatile and make any rug that's layered on top really pop. Jute rugs are also easy to clean – use them as the base layer in any room.
The trick to layering rugs is to do it in a way that feels organic. Choose a colour palette that works with the room, then layer on two or more complementary rugs that have different textures. Look for rugs with similar pile heights so that they don't feel bulky to walk on – or worse, make someone trip. Try it out with a contemporary wool rug as your base and layer a vintage-inspired chenille rug on top.
Tip: When placing your furniture on the rugs, keep the leg rule in mind: Either place all legs, half of the legs or no legs on your layered rugs.
Blend Styles & Patterns
If you'd rather stick to one rug material, try blending different rug styles or patterns for a curated vibe. Just remember to choose complementary colours. Try an ornate traditional or broken-line rug placed over a solid-coloured rug or woven jute. This look adds contrast and edge to a room that's otherwise simple and neutral.
Give yourself a comfy space to land on chilly mornings. When layering rugs in bedrooms consider a sheepskin option. That softness doesn't just make mornings easier, it also helps control noise with the extra padding. Bonus: Because of their small size, sheepskin rugs can easily be rolled up and stored when warmer temps arrive.
Use a second rug to visually separate spaces (think: a designated conversation area in your living room or an inviting dining nook). This works well if you live in a smaller condo or studio as a statement rug, like a cowhide rug, draws the eye inward.
Have fun with your layered rugs. If you want to switch things up, place your top rug diagonally over your base rug. This is a great look to try if your top rug is geometric or striped.
