Everything You Need to Clean a Shower Curtain
Guaranteed sparkle and shine.
Cleaning a less-than sparkling shower curtain is now easier than ever with our simple guide. Follow these quick steps to help you clean your shower curtain like a pro.
What You'll Need:
- Clean white towels
- Colour-safe bleach
- Detergent
Step 1: Remove Curtain and Liner
Remove both the curtain and the liner from the rings. Leave the rings on your shower curtain rod.
Step 2: Read the Manufacturer’s Instructions
Make sure to follow the instructions on each label. Some fabrics may be hand-wash only and some require cold water. If they can be placed in the washing machine, follow the steps below. If they're hand-wash only, skip to the How to Hand-Wash a Shower Curtain and Liner section.
Step 3: Place in Washing Machine
Take both the liner and the curtain and place them in the washing machine. Take a few white towels and put them in the machine. This will help agitate the curtain and remove grime. Add detergent and the pour a small amount of colour-safe bleach into your machine’s bleach dispenser. Use a warm water setting so it doesn’t melt the plastic or vinyl.
If your fabric curtain requires cold water, wash your liner separately as the cold water may crack the plastic.
Step 4: Hang Dry
Do not place the curtain or the liner in the dryer. They can be hung back up in the bathroom to hang dry. Make sure they hang flat instead of bunched to one side so they dry faster.
How to Hand-Wash a Shower Curtain and Liner
What You'll Need:
- 2 microfibre cloths
- Baking soda
- Fabric cleaner
- Vinegar
- Scrub brush
When cleaning a shower curtain by hand, take a microfibre cloth and place it in warm water. Then wring it out so it is damp and sprinkle baking soda on top. Use the cloth to scrub the shower curtain on both sides. Dampen the cloth and add more baking soda as needed throughout this process.
Rinse off all the baking soda with a clean, damp microfibre cloth. Keep repeating this step until all of the baking soda is gone. If stains do not come out with baking soda try using a fabric cleaner, but spot-test it first on a part of the curtain to make sure it doesn’t remove any dye.
To clean the liner, spray it with a solution of one part vinegar and four parts water. Dip a scrub brush or rag into this solution and clean the mould or mildew off. Then rinse the solution off with your shower head or a cup of water — make sure to work from the top down.
Tip; Wash shower curtains once a month and plastic liners once every three months.
