Your Complete Guide to Bed and Mattress Sizes
Sleep right, sleep tight.
Finding the right-sized bed and mattress can be a bit of a challenge, especially when there's so many sizes to choose from (roughly 10 in total). That's why our guide to bed and mattress sizes below demystifies the selection process, leaving you fully clued up on how to work out the most suitable bed and mattress for you.
Overview
Key Things to Consider
Before deciding on your mattress and bed size, you should first find out the length and width of your bedroom. Once you've got these measurements, you'll have a good idea of what sizes your bed and mattress should be.
Although a larger mattress might sound desirable, limiting the amount of space you have left in your bedroom isn't ideal. On the other hand, smaller beds can drown in big bedrooms.
If you like the size of your existing bed, but aren't sure which size it corresponds to, check the label of your mattress or measure the length and width of your sleeping area and compare it to the measurements below.
Choosing a Mattress Size
Small Single/Single
If you're searching for a mattress for one person, a small single or single is for you. Single-size mattresses are a little bit longer than small single mattresses and are pretty common in student setups.
Small Double/Double
If you're a single sleeper but enjoy a bit more space, opt for a double or small double-sized mattress.
Kingsize
Kingsize mattresses offer that extra slice of comfort and can easily fit two people with extra space of needed. This mattress option is a popular choice for couples.
Super King
Sleep like a royal on a super king mattress. With enough space to fit you, a partner and even a pet, these mattresses almost guarantee your limbs won't hang off in the middle of the night.
Important: These measurements don't refer to the dimensions of the actual bed frame, but the mattress size that it is suitable for.
What About Mattress Depth?
Mattresses are usually 15 - 30cm deep but vary between manufacturers (some styles can be as deep as 38cm), so make sure to check before buying to ensure that your bed sheets fit the mattress properly. Most bed sheets are made to fit standard mattresses, but some styles can be up to 40cm deep.
