The mat is made of a 2mm thick hard rubber PVC with a textured surface and 3mm spikes on the underside. It lays nice and flat and has not moved around on my carpet, which has a short pile of about 5mm. The only negative has been when sitting in my chair in the same location the wheels sink into the mat a little. At 13 stone I'm not overly heavy, so for a heavier user this could be more of a problem. This makes it a little difficult to roll on the mat, but no more than if the chair was directly on the carpet. The wheel dents in the mat, do disappear once you roll to another part of the mat or get off your chair. The mat does appear to be stopping the carpet and underlay from receiving this damage, which is the main reason for the purchase.
