Claude has depicted an imaginary port at sunset. The artist painted a number of imaginary seaports (see 'Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba' and 'Seaport with the Embarkation of Saint Ursula'). The palace front at the left has been adapted from a gateway built in about 1570 and leading to the Farnese Gardens from the Forum in Rome. Behind it is the antique Arch of Titus. On the nearer building, a clock with a single hand gives the time as five o'clock. The painting corresponds with drawing no. 43 in the 'Liber Veritatis' (British Museum), the inscription on which records the painting as having been made for Angelo Giorio (1586 - 1662), who was made a cardinal in 1643. Born in Dorset, Greenacres studied illustration at Redruth Art College, Cornwall. Following 20 years in the advertising and craft industries, Greenacres decided to return to his first love, painting. Greenacres work is primarily inspired by his lifelong love of the Dorset seaside; the result of childhood summers spent on the beach in Lyme Regis or on his grandfather’s deep-sea fishing boat. Painting primarily on wood, reminiscent of the driftwood found on beaches, Greenacres pieces have a natural, innocent feel reflecting his admiration for naive and primitive art. In 1989, Greenacres escaped from urban mayhem to a farmhouse in the countryside. He remains a convert to the pleasures of rural life, living with his two children and horses in Wiltshire. Designed and printed in the UK, part of the funky art cushion range, this cushion will look great in any VW camper, bus, even on a sofa or bed and is a must for anyone with an interest in VW campers or giving their home a retro look. The 98-gun ship Temeraire played a distinguished role in Nelsons victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, after which she was known as the Fighting Temeraire. The ship remained in service until 1838 when she was decommissioned and towed from Sheerness to Rotherhithe to be broken up. The painting was thought to represent the decline of Britain’s naval power. The Temeraire is shown traveling east, away from the sunset, even though Rotherhithe is west of sheerness, but Turners main concern was to evoke a sense of loss, rather than to give an exact recording of the event. The spectacularly colourful setting of the sun draws a parallel with the passing of the old warship. By contrast the new steam-powered tug is smaller and more prosaic. Turner was in his sixties when he painted The Fighting Temeraire. It shows his mastery of painting techniques to suggest sea and sky. Paint laid on thickly is used to render the sun’s rays striking the clouds. By contrast, the ships rigging is meticulously painted.
