Curb Your Curiosity With Our Guide to Wall Stickers
All you need to get stuck in.
Want to avoid the hassle of repainting a room? Perhaps you're nervous about committing to wallpaper? Wall stickers are the perfect solution! Wall stickers are the budget-friendly alternative to transforming a room within minutes. Whether you want to create a fun-filled safari scene in your kids' room or a natural forest in your hallway, they're ideal for adding depth to even the dullest of spaces.
What Are Wall Stickers?
Wall stickers are, well, stickers essentially. They're tapestries or appliques that come in a wide variety of designs, colours and styles, and are most commonly made from matte vinyl or laminated paper with an adhesive backing (meaning no mess and no prep time). The laminate overlay protects the print from wear and tear as they're more resistant to peeling, cracking and fading than traditional wallpapers.
Where to Place Wall Stickers
Place your wall stickers on most smooth surfaces as they're designed to attach to ceramics, glass, concrete and tiles. Decided you want to move your stickers elsewhere? Not a problem. Most wall stickers are reusable and leave no residue when you peel them off.
What to Consider When Buying Wall Stickers
Know Your Audience
First things first, are you buying for kids or adults? Either way, there's a huge range of designs to choose from - which is part of what makes wall stickers such a popular interior trend. If you're decorating a nursery or little one's room then cartoons, animals or sports-inspired stickers are great for creating fun-filled atmosphere. The options are endless if you want to update your home in a more sophisticated way too - think typography for the hallway, cityscapes for the living room and flowers for the bedroom.
Know What You Want
Even the nicest of wall stickers can be a disaster if they don't fit in with the rest of the room. Choose a centralised theme and stick with it to ensure you have a cohesive look.
Location, Location, Location
When decorating, make sure you have clear idea of the layout of the room. Decide whether you want a piece to be central or placed to one side, and think about the furniture that will surround it.
Applying, Maintaining and Customising Wall Stickers
- Wipe the wall with a slightly damp cloth to make sure it's nice and clean before applying your design, and make sure to leave it to dry for at least a couple of hours or it won't stick.
- Don't apply them to freshly-painted walls - leave for at least two weeks.
- After applying your wall sticker, keep the backing! This way if you decide you want to take it off and save/move it, the adhesive is protected and it won't crease.
- If your sticker is looking a little grubby, simply wiping with a damp cloth will sort it out - steer clear of chemical cleaners which could damage it.
- If you want to customise your sticker, no problem! They are perfect for craft and DIY projects and easy to cut into different shapes and sizes with scissors or a utility knife.
- You can draw on your designs to personalise them too - use a marker pen or invest in dry-erase stickers which are designed to be wipe-clean.
