Helping You Plan Your Next Caravan Holiday

Enjoy all the UK has to offer.

how to plan a caravan holiday

Whether you’re getting tired of working from home or suffering from cabin fever, we’ve never needed a holiday more. But with continued flight cancellations and overseas travel uncertainty, this summer we're packing up and hitting the road caravan-style. Discover our top tips to giving your touring caravan that luxury holiday feel, ready for you to explore all that a staycation in the UK has to offer.

Overview:

How to Make Your Caravan More Comfortable

Add Colour to Your Caravan

You'd be surprised at how much a small splash of colour improves the interior of your caravan. Play around with paint on your walls, steering clear of everyday white to add personal touches that can really make your caravan feel like a home ahead of your holiday. And if painting isn't an option, try incorporating colours, prints and patterns with cushions, throws, rugs and curtains.

Bring Your Home Comforts With You

Why splurge on brand new furniture and decor when you can easily take pieces from your home? Pack up a few towels, cosy blankets and even your favourite mug for an instant home-away-from-home effect. Dining al fresco? Then make sure to grab your fancy tableware, glasses and cutlery and make every meal on your holiday a virtue.

Personalisation is Key

Before you take off into the British sunset, make sure you bring along a few family photos, wall art or posters, anything that'll give your caravan more character. Of course, your trip is also an opportune moment to take even more memorable photos, ready for framing when you get home.

Tip: Why not install a curtain or room divider and create separate spaces for each person to relax and unwind.

Keeping Entertained During Your Caravan Journey

Let's be honest, the UK motorway system isn't the most exciting place in the world and if you're not the one driving to your holiday destination, finding ways to pass the time can become tiresome, especially if you have children.

But before you head for the nearest phone or tablet, consider taking a digital detox and pack some classic board games, a pack of playing cards and a selection of colouring or activity books. Popular board games such as Charades, Scrabble and Guess Who will help to avoid the inevitable 'are we there yet?', whilst older-games like Cards Against Humanity are a hit with everyone old enough to play.

If you really have to revert to technology in order to keep the peace, then make sure you have a fair amount of chargers on hand as well as sets of headphones. Download a couple of fun but educational apps for the kids to use and look into downloading some new e-books or podcast series for yourself.

And if the weather permits it, pack some outdoor games such as giant Connect Four, Jenga or Boules ready for when you reach your staycation location.

5 Caravan Camping Hacks to Take on The Road

1. Beat the Heat and Regulate your Caravan's Temperature

Bear in mind that it can get very hot and sticky inside a caravan during summer, but the good news is that alongside some quality air conditioning, there are a few other ways to stay cool.

Once you arrive at your destination, search for a shaded spot to park your caravan and only open the windows when it's cooler outside than in. For better air circulation, open the windows that are located on the shadier side first and allow those refreshing breezes to fill your space. Darken the windows sitting on that sunnier side with blinds or roller blinds.

If possible, aim to cook every hot meal outside on the grill as indoor ovens and stoves can quickly make your caravan hot and stuffy. If you do cook inside, crack open the windows and doors to let the air flow through.

2. Don't Forget the Essentials

If you're renting a caravan, make sure that it comes fairly equipped so as to avoid over packing. Most caravan rental companies offer extras such as kitchen utensils, cooking accessories, window blinds and an external awning.

That grill that's been gathering dust in your shed? Bring it with you! Nothing beats being able to set up the BBQ to cook delicious barbecued dishes every night, so remember to also pack the necessary cookware and barbecue tools, a few folding chairs, portable lamps as well as a set of bluetooth speakers.

A small but mighty essential is a set of tension ropes. These ropes are ideal for doubling up as a clothesline, curtain rod or to hold your luggage or bikes securely together. If you're planning on taking just a few items of clothing in the hope of regular washing, the ropes will ensure that you have somewhere easily accessible for quick drying.

3. Chose the Right Location

Of course this one's a no brainer, but depending on what you want to get out of your staycation e.g. hiking, you should carefully look at your options.

If you're planning on heading somewhere a little hotter in the UK i.e. Cornwall or The Isles of Scilly, you should aim to set up near water. Treating yourself to a cool dip ever morning is bliss and the cool sea breeze will help keep your caravan fresh. For hiking trips, wooded or areas of forest are relatively cool in summer and offer all the beauty of nature, including rivers, mountains and secluded lakes.

4. Bring Along a First Aid Kit

Accidents, they're bound to happen, so make sure your caravan is equipped with a well-stocked first aid kit that is easily accessible.

Being in nature also means you're more susceptible to potential cuts, bruises and bites, so think about adding a travel-sized first aid kit in addition to your main one. Something that slots into your backpack or bag and includes a few plasters, antiseptic wipes, tweezers and pain killers, for just in case.

5. Snacks, Snacks and More Snacks

Trust us when we say you can never have enough snacks available. Pack a few cereal bars, sharable bags of crisps and homemade small but juicy cakes in a cool bag or backpack for the road trip. These will not only keep your hunger at bay, but will keep any little ones occupied too.

You can also go old school once you arrive at your destination by preparing fresh, fluffy popcorn over a campfire or grill. All you need is aluminum foil, corn kernels, coconut oil or butter and a little salt or sugar for seasoning. Seal the corn in the foil and pop it on the grill - the ultimate camping hack for snacks on the road trip.

Tip: If you've brought a closed sieve, you can put the kernels in there watch them pop as you hold them over the fire or grill.
