Add These Finishing Touches to Your Sideboard
Any excuse to add decor.
If your sideboard or chest of drawers is looking more lacklustre than lovingly styled, spare a few minutes for a quick restyle with our expert tips. From adding modern art to vases filled with blooms, you'll have yourself a drool-worthy display in no time.
A Clean Slate
Before attempting a sideboard makeover, you'll want to begin with a blank canvas, so be sure to remove everything from the sideboard's surface as well as anything from the wall behind. Then give your surfaces a good clean with warm, soapy water and a dry cloth. This step is ideal if you want to repaint your sideboard in order to give it a whole new look. Alternatively, consider a DIY makeover with wallpaper (more details on how to do that here).
Add Emphasis to the Wall
Start with the surface immediately behind your chest of drawers or sideboard. A mirror is a classic option - hang yours slightly off-centre if you'd also like to showcase it alongside some wall art. A large wall hanging is great for creating a statement and helps to draw the eye upwards. Whatever you choose, try to make sure that it matches the theme you're going for - it should be an extension of the look, not a distraction.
Stylish Selections
Now it's time to add your accents. Go for a lean selection if you prefer a more minimal look or utilise decorative trays and baskets for a lively display that manages to look artfully organised instead of messy.
Stacks of books are a timeless choice and great for adding a pop of colour. Beautiful vases are wonderful for displaying faux flowers or seasonal blooms while air plants or terrariums are great low-maintenance options for bringing a bit of nature inside. Utilise pretty little bowls to organise any knick-knacks or display candles. There are no hard and fast rules with what accents you should use, but just make sure they're pieces you enjoy.
Anchors Away
Bring your new chest or sideboard look together with a rug or some furniture flanking either side. A rug is a great way to tie everything together if you've got a certain colour theme and helps to draw attention to your focal point piece. Large potted plants or short shelves on one or both sides of your piece will also help to draw attention towards your beautifully styled sideboard.
Tip: Whether you're styling a coffee table, mantelpiece or sideboard, the classic rule of three is an easy and effective way to refresh your look. Choose three complementary pieces with varying heights (for instance a mirror, a lamp and an art piece) and there you have it, a simple yet stylish vignette.
