Moving into a new home is the perfect opportunity to design a guest room to wow your friends and family and make them feel as if they are staying in luxury hotel. We have reached out to Miller Homes, a new homes house builder, to get their expert advice for creating a five star stay.
We've Got You Covered
With the unpredictable British weather and the fact that some people are more sensitive to the heat or feel the cold, it is important to provide bedding for every preference. While some like to wrap themselves into a fortress of layers, others are happy with just a sheet. Keeping a drawer, cupboard or shelf in the wardrobe stocked with chunky knit blankets and additional covers is a great way to ensure a good night sleep for everyone.
Get the basics right with a good frame and mattress combination to create a harmonious, peaceful sleep, which will also give that show-stopping appearance as soon as your guest walks in. If you have a smaller room and want to make the most of space, go for a pullout sofa bed instead. When dressing the bed, start with a lightweight duvet and add layers that guests can choose to keep or brush off, such as a thick faux fur throw. Follow the same idea with the pillows too, always offering two so your guests have a choice of height.
A luxurious en-suite bathroom helps your guests stay relaxed and refreshed throughout their stay. Try to appeal to everyone’s preference, keeping the palette neutral and bright to open up the room, and finish off with a touch of greenery, using plants like aloe, cacti and succulents.
Once you’ve set the style, fill the bathroom with all the weekend essentials such as fresh towels of all sizes, extra soap and maybe even a bathrobe for ultimate comfort. Use small mason jars to make your en-suite look like a hotel spa and fill with indulgent bath salts, fragrant rose petals, lotions and essential oils. Don’t forget the all-important mirror too; adding both extra light and usefulness to the en-suite.
Finally, help your guests prepare for the unexpected and lay out some items that are commonly forgotten, like spare razors, face wipes and tooth brushes – this can really earn you some extra host points.
A Calming Atmosphere
When your guests retire to the bedroom for the night, they want to be met with a sense of tranquility that will send them peacefully off to sleep. Opt for soothing shades of light greys, relaxing blues or easy pastel hues for the walls and furniture prints. Complement this serene atmosphere with stylish furniture, whether this is a dark metallic bed against on-trend navy walls, or natural bleached wood with classic white.
Be sure to fill the rest of the room with a wardrobe, chest of drawers or empty storage boxes for clothing, toiletries and baggage, as well as comfortable seating for early morning or late-night reading.
A few final touches can really go a long way to making your guests’ stay that much nicer. Start by welcoming them into the room with the relaxing aroma of diffusers or essential oils. Next, offer a range of books on a side table or desk for your guests to read if they wake before you – include some of your personal favourites or a guidebook for the local area.
At night, there’s nothing worse than heading up to bed and getting the pang for a bite to eat or a quick glass of water. Sometimes, guests may feel rude asking for a little extra at night, so provide a platter of healthy snacks and a bottle of water with glasses. Finally, plug in a charging cable for their devices – just in case your guests forget theirs.
Keep Your Guests Entertained
Even though your guests will only spend a few hours in the bedroom, you may consider providing a TV, DVD players and/or Bluetooth speakers. This means they can enjoy their favourite album, film or catch up on the latest news while getting ready. Another option is to lay out a good range of magazines and books to entertain them during their downtime.
