The hornets face a challenge: Natural and suitable nesting places in old trees are becoming increasingly scarce. This means that they increasingly seek alternative nesting sites in human settlements, such as roller shutter boxes, nesting boxes for birds, attics, sheds or barns. However, this closeness to humans often harbors the potential for conflict and does not always offer enough space for the optimal development of the hornet colony.
To counteract this problem, the dobar® hornet box was developed. This box is specially tailored to the needs of the hornets and offers plenty of space for their colony. It is suitable for the natural settling of an existing hornet colony. A special feature of this box is the robust multiplex wooden roof with special weather resistance and optimal protection against rain. In addition, it is compatible with the suction box of the "vacuum cleaner method for vacuuming a strong hornet colony" according to Robert Ripberger. This provides an effective method of relocation that protects both the hornets and the residents.
The installation and location of the hornet box are crucial for its success. On the back of the box there are strong hanging bars with corresponding holes. For mounting, we recommend aluminum or wire nails to ensure that the box is stable and does not wobble. It should be installed at least 4 meters above the ground, away from crowds. The orientation of the entrance holes to the east or south ensures optimal orientation for the hornets. In addition, make sure that the approach is free of branches or other obstacles and that the location is not exposed to too cold or windy conditions. Excessive sunlight should be avoided, ideally the box should receive morning sun and be in the shade at noon.
The cleaning and control of the hornet box are important steps to maintain its functionality. The box should be cleaned once a year, towards the end of April or beginning of May. Old combs are removed to make room for a new nest. Parts of the nest cover can be left in place to attract hornet queens. In addition, the excrement on the manure board should be removed regularly to ensure the hygiene of the box.
We hope that the dobar® hornet box will help to minimize conflict between humans and animals, while at the same time helping to protect and promote the hornets. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
