Stokesay Castle sits like a secret at the edge of the Shropshire hills, a quietly romantic reminder of England's medieval past. This travel poster celebrates that enduring charm: the compact curtain wall, the handsome timber-framed gatehouse and the stone halls that once sheltered merchants and knights. Seen from a gentle vantage point, the castle feels both intimate and adventurous, an invitation to wander lanes where history lingers in the stones and the air.
Built for a prosperous wool merchant in the late 13th century, Stokesay is one of the best-preserved fortified manor houses in England. Rather than a towering fortress, it reads as a home with defensive grace: broad ranges, round towers and a welcoming gatehouse that combines timber framing with solid stonework. This blend of domestic comfort and martial silhouette gives the site a unique atmosphere - part lived-in household, part fairytale stronghold - and it's precisely that duality the poster aims to capture.
The surrounding landscape is as much a part of Stokesay's story as the building itself. Rolling meadows and distant hills fold into soft ribbons of green and blue, framing the castle and suggesting the slower rhythms of country life. The River Onny and the lanes of the Marches add to the sense of place: this is England that feels lived in, where every field and hedgerow has a history of sheep, market towns and long country walks. On clear days, sunlight warms the stone and throws long, gentle shadows; at dusk, the scene grows intimate and hushed. The poster mirrors those moods with a restrained colour palette that lets the landscape breathe.
The artwork uses clean, simplified forms and a limited, cohesive palette so the eye rests easily on the castle's architectural details. Warm sandstone tones and ochres give the buildings a lived-in glow, while layered greens suggest fields and hedgerows.
