Perched on the gentle slopes of the Yorkshire Wolds, Wharram Percy is a place that quietly holds centuries. Once a bustling medieval village, today it is celebrated for the haunting outline of its stone church and the earthworks that mark where houses and lanes once clustered. This travel poster brings that history into warm, modern focus - a romantic invitation to imagine life in a vanished England and to stand, briefly, among whispering grasses and long views.
The scene frames the ruined church as a beacon on the horizon, its silhouette softened by the evening light. The surrounding landscape is rendered as a sweep of rolling hills and shallow valleys, the Wolds' chalk underlayer suggested through ribbons of pale green and muted gold. The poster captures the mood of late afternoon: long shadows, a gentle breeze across the fields, and a sky threaded with slow, painterly clouds. It's a vision of the north as both wild and familiar, rooted in the rhythms of farming, harvest and the slow work of time.
Wharram Percy's story is a quietly dramatic one. Abandoned across centuries for reasons both social and economic, the village has since become an extraordinary archaeological record. Traces of everyday life - house platforms, hollow ways, boundary banks - remain readable under careful eye, and it is that sense of human presence and absence that the poster seeks to honour. Rather than a cold reconstruction, the artwork suggests history as memory: partial, luminous and open to imagination.
The poster's aesthetic nods to classic travel art while keeping a contemporary clarity. Shapes are simplified and confident, stacked in layers that lead the eye from foreground grass to distant ridge. The colour palette favours warm ochres, sunlit amber and soft blues, balanced by subdued greens that recall stubble and pasture.
