Perched at the entrance to a sheltered harbour, Donaghadee Lighthouse is a small monument to long journeys and brief, beloved returns. This travel poster celebrates that feeling - the hush of a dawn tide, the reassurance of a light on the pier, and the promise of a coastal walk that leads to unexpected views. It is a tribute to the subtle drama of Northern Ireland's shoreline: salt on the air, gulls wheeling against a wide sky, and low cottages clustered like confidants behind the quay.
Donaghadee itself is a place of approachable history. Once an important packet port with well-worn stone piers and a distinct maritime rhythm, the town retains the character of a fishing village where people meet by the water. Local pubs hum with conversation and the odd fiddle tune; colourful doors and chimneys rise in small terraces that slope gently away from the sea. The landscape beyond is quietly generous - green fields and low hills that seem to cradle the harbour. At certain times the light turns everything warm and forgiving, which is exactly the mood this poster seeks to capture.
The design takes its cues from classic travel posters, reviving a mid-century mood without feeling dated. Clean, confident lines define the lighthouse and pier while simplified shapes suggest the cottages and headland beyond. The palette leans on marine blues and sea-glass greens, balanced by creamy lighthouse tones and soft sandstone for the pier. A strip of terracotta and muted greys adds depth to the village, while a clear cerulean sky lifts the composition and keeps the mood airy and hopeful.
Typography plays its part in the romance. Bold, modern lettering anchors the composition at the base, reminiscent of vintage travel prints that invited people to journey simply for the pleasure of being somewhere new.
