Perched on the west coast of Scotland, Oban has long been called the "Gateway to the Hebrides." This travel poster celebrates that easy romance: a fishing harbour framed by gentle hills, a necklace of pastel houses, and the unmistakable silhouette of McCaig's Tower watching over the town. It is a place of sea-burnished light, lingering sunsets and the promise of islands just beyond the horizon.
History and culture sit close to the water here. Once a small fishing settlement, Oban grew in Victorian times as steamships and railway connections brought visitors to Argyll and the islands. The town retains a timeless quality; cobbled streets and stone fronts hint at a layered past, while the working harbour still fills with creels and ferries. Local life revolves around the sea - early morning markets, the sizzle of fresh shellfish in harbour cafés, and the low call of gulls overhead.
The landscape around Oban is elemental. From the quay you can see the glassy sweep of the Firth of Lorn, the ragged outline of islands such as Kerrera and Mull, and the distant blue of mainland hills. Wildlife is part of the story: seals sunning on the breakwater, porpoises at play, and passing gannets hunting in the shallows. Walkers and photographers come for short climbs and long views; boaters for island hopping; and anyone with a taste for whisky seeks out the Oban Distillery, where a smoky, coastal dram speaks of barley, sea spray and local patience.
This poster captures those moods with a restrained, vintage-inspired palette and a clean, modern composition. The art style nods to mid-century travel posters: simplified forms, flat planes of colour and an economy of detail that lets the viewer's imagination complete the scene. Sea blues and soft aquamarines blend into muted purples for distant hills, while warm stone and ochre suggest streets and rooftops warmed by evening light.
