There are few coastal walks that promise equal measures of drama and intimacy. The Gobbins, on the rugged Northern Ireland coast, is one of them: a carved pathway skirting sheer cliffs, swinging bridges spanning turquoise inlets, and the constant music of surf and wind. This travel poster celebrates that wild meeting of rock and sea, calling to mind brisk mornings, sheltering coves and the hush after a squall.
The story of The Gobbins is a tale of daring engineering and pure seaside romance. Conceived as a way to bring people to the water's edge, the cliff path threads tunnels cut into the rock and iron bridges bolted to vertical faces. Much of the charm here comes from the contrast between human craft and coastal force - a narrow path that feels both protective and precarious, a corridor between land and open Atlantic. Visitors come for the view, for the thrill of the route, and for the quiet drama of a coastline that changes mood with every shift of light.
Culturally, the area is steeped in maritime life. Fishermen, lighthouse keepers and small communities have long read weather and tide as part of everyday living, and that lived-in relationship with the sea still hangs in the air. Seabirds wheel and call along the cliffs, seals bob in sheltered pools, and on calm days the horizon seems to stretch on forever. The Gobbins is both a destination and a reminder: of how landscape shapes lives and how the sea keeps its own calendar.
This poster is designed in the spirit of classic travel art - bold, pared-back shapes and a limited, considered palette. Warm ochres and terracotta suggest sunlit sandstone and weathered cliffs; slate blues and sea greens convey the restless Atlantic and the foam of surf.
