Perched where town meets sea, Caernarfon Castle is one of Wales's most enduring images of power and romance. This travel poster celebrates the castle's commanding silhouette: round towers and crenellated walls rising from the quay, the placid ribbon of the Menai Strait beyond, and the layered ridges of Snowdonia fading into the distance. It is a place where history, landscape and coastal life meet - and where every vista feels like an invitation.
Built by Edward I in the late 13th century as part of the great ring of fortifications in north Wales, Caernarfon was intended as both a military stronghold and a royal symbol. Walk its ramparts and you sense centuries of activity: banners, royal processions, the bustle of a working port, and quieter domestic rhythms inside thick stone walls. The castle has been witness to pivotal moments in Welsh history and retains a ceremonial resonance today, yet it also remains a living part of the town - a place of cobbled streets, market days and Welsh language that gives the site a warm civic pride.
The landscape around Caernarfon is central to its allure. To the west, the Menai Strait threads between Anglesey and the mainland; its waters reflect sky and castle alike, dotted with sailing boats and the occasional fishing skiff. To the east and north, the foothills climb to the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia), their muted blues and purples a perfect backdrop to the castle's golden stone. That contrast - solid masonry against shifting sea and distant mountains - is what makes Caernarfon so photogenic and so poetic.
This poster captures that poetry with a pared-back travel-poster aesthetic. Shapes are simplified into bold planes of colour: warm ochres and terracotta for the castle, cool indigos and teals for the water, and dusky mauves for the hills at dusk.
