Cwm Idwal sits like a secret folded into the heart of Snowdonia, a glacial amphitheatre carved by ice and time. At its centre lies Llyn Idwal, a dark, reflective lake ringed by steep cliffs and scree slopes that rise into the Glyderau. For centuries this hollow has drawn walkers and climbers alike - a place for quiet reflection, breathless views and the thrill of height.
This travel-poster celebrates that mood. The composition distils Cwm Idwal to its essential shapes: the serrated skyline, the bowl of the cwm, the calm surface of the lake and the cluster of evergreens anchoring the foreground. Colours are chosen with care - warm ochres and russet browns suggest autumnal ferns and sunlit ridges; mossy greens and deep firs recall the hardy plants of the high ground; slate and charcoal greys give weight to the crags and the famed Idwal Slabs, beloved by climbers for their clean faces. A pale, cooling sky suggests early morning or dusk, those hours when the light softens the landscape and the world feels quietly expansive.
The style nods to classic travel posters, using simplified forms and layered planes to evoke distance and drama without photographic detail. Bold blocks of colour, subtle gradients and restrained line work create a timeless, nostalgic feel that sits comfortably in both modern and traditional interiors. The typography is strong and confident, echoing mid-century poster lettering: it anchors the image and invites the eye to linger on the place name, as if promising an invitation.
History and nature here are close companions. Cwm Idwal's geology tells of ancient glaciers and mountain-building, while its Welsh place names speak to a living culture - the language and landscape folded into one another.
