Kilmartin Glen is one of Scotland's most compelling chapters laid out in stone - a quiet valley where Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments punctuate the moorland like punctuation marks in a very long story. This travel poster celebrates that layered history and the gentle drama of Argyll's landscape, inviting you to imagine slow footsteps along grassy tracks, the hush of peat and heather, and the hush of sky above ancient cairns.
The glen is remarkable for its concentration of archaeology: standing stones, stone circles, chambered cairns and carved rock panels, some bearing cup-and-ring marks that have looked out over these hills for thousands of years. In this poster the stones stand prominently in the foreground, rendered as simplified, sure forms that suggest age and mystery. Behind them, low drifts of hills and a sweep of sky create a feeling of space - the same generous presence that draws walkers and history lovers to Kilmartin.
Colour is central to the piece's mood. A palette of warm ochres and soft sandstone tones honours the weathered surfaces of standing stones, while mossy greens, heather purples and muted browns recall peat-stained earth and hillside. The horizon is a cool, clear blue that hints at ever-changing Scottish light: a bright morning or a calm late afternoon that gilds the edges of rock and grass. Together these tones balance earth and air, history and solitude.
The travel-poster aesthetic here is deliberately pared back: broad, flat colour fields, clean lines and generous negative space allow the viewer to settle on the subject without distraction. Typography takes a confident, retro approach - bold, geometric lettering that evokes mid-century travel posters and the romance of distant places on the edge of map and memory. The result is not a literal reproduction of the glen but a mood: a quiet, elegant invitation to explore.
