Perched on the sheltered curve of Loch Carron, Plockton feels like a pocket of sunlight in the Scottish Highlands. This travel poster captures that rare combination of Highland ruggedness and coastal grace: a crescent of whitewashed cottages, palm-fringed shorelines fed by a warm Gulf Stream, and small wooden boats rocking gently on a mirror-calm harbour. It is a place that reads like a love letter to slow travel - a village of fishermen, crofters and visitors who come to savour the light and sea air.
Historically Plockton grew from a modest fishing settlement into a beloved retreat once the railway made the north more accessible. There is a long tradition here of Gaelic language and song, a sense of community anchored to the tide and the land. The local rhythms - hauling creels at dawn, repairing nets in a doorway, shared plates of fresh scallops and langoustine - are part of what gives Plockton its lived-in charm. Walk the shoreline and you'll find evidence of an older economy alongside the holiday cottages: stone jetties, weathered boats and hedgerows that shelter narrow lanes.
This poster celebrates both place and memory. The composition frames the harbour as an invitation: a curved pier that leads the eye across blue water to distant hills, layers of coastal land rolling away into a softer, violet horizon. The palette is deliberately restrained - deep sea blues, sky-washed aquas, olive and moss greens, warm cream for the cottages and a pop of terracotta on roof tiles - to echo the calm, restorative light of a Highland afternoon. Palm silhouettes at the fore give the scene an unexpected, almost Mediterranean flourish, a reminder of Plockton's unique microclimate and the way the sea can surprise.
Rendered in a vintage travel-poster style, the artwork relies on simplified shapes and confident blocks of colour rather than fussy detail.
