Perched on a rocky peninsula above a graceful bend of the River Wear, Durham Cathedral has presided over the city for nearly a millennium. Built after the Norman Conquest and crowned by soaring towers and ribbed vaults, the cathedral is both a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and a living centre of English history. Walk the quiet cloisters, follow the honeyed stone to its great nave, and you feel the slow passage of centuries: pilgrim routes, monastic devotion and the hush of torchlight all linger in the masonry.\n\nThis travel poster celebrates that heritage with a romantic, travel-poster sensibility. The composition frames the cathedral as you might first see it arriving by river or train - monumental yet intimate, settled in a sweep of countryside and dotted with autumnal trees. The River Wear leads the eye forward in broad, curving bands of soft blue, a calm ribbon that connects viewer and place. Hills and bridges are simplified into gentle shapes, letting the cathedral's mass stand proud against a pale, expansive sky.\n\nThe colour palette is intentionally warm and evocative: sandstone ochres and sunlit golds recall the cathedral's Durham stone; muted olive and rust suggest the wooded banks and seasonal change; pale blues offer cool contrast and the reflective quality of the river. Colours are layered in flat, clean blocks to evoke the golden age of travel posters - optimistic, graphic, and instantly recognisable. Bold typography in uppercase anchors the scene, its vintage lines lending a postcard charm that feels both classic and modern.\n\nDurham is more than its cathedral. The city around it is a patchwork of narrow streets, academic life, independent shops and riverside walks. Durham University brings a young, curious energy; market stalls and tea rooms hum with conversation; festivals and music echo off the stone.
