Aboard the HMS Beagle during the darwin expeditions of 1831-36, Captain Robert Fitzroy developed and refined the 18th-century storm bottle. This involved much testing and observation and resulted in him being able to make a number of weather predictions with a fair(ish) degree of accuracy. The point is that then as now, no one is quite sure how the storm bottle works. Is it atmospheric pressure, temperature, electrical disturbances, and it's this element of uncertainty, of almost magical alchemy, that makes these storm bottles so fascinating. Stands 16 cm high on a traditional wooden base and comes with Fitzroy's observations. Will you agree with them or find new interpretations? The mystery's been going on for nearly 180 years. And looks set to continue.

Aboard HMS Beagle during the Darwin Expeditions of 1831-36, Captain Robert Fitzroy developed and refined the 18th-century storm bottle. Then, as now, no one is quite sure how the storm bottle works. Is it atmospheric pressure, temperature, electrical disturbances? Keep your own records and see if you can confirm or improve upon Fitzroy’s observations.

These curious and mesmerising instruments measure the power of electromagnetic radiation. Made from a glass bulb with much of the air removed to form a partial vacuum, inside is a set of fine metal vanes, each with one dark and one light side, mounted on a spindle. The vanes rotate, as if by magic when exposed to sunlight, artificial light, or infrared radiation (even the heat of a hand nearby can be enough) – the more intense the light, the faster the rotation.

Light has almost magical properties, you’ll see what they mean with this ruler magnifier. It combines the practicality of a ruler and magnifying lens and the simple physics of harnessed natural light. Lay the ruler directly on top of your materials to double the image size. The optical quality lens is specially shaped to gather and direct ambient light to the viewing area. The inch and metric scales are set above and below the magnified viewing zone. Smooth notches at the ruler's end create a comfortable grip and a thin red place-holding line helps with tasks as varied as numbers crunching, checking blueprints, marking sewing patterns, leisure reading, and more.
