The little-known GPS of Ancient Times. Perhaps the most used multipurpose astronomical instrument in history, the astrolabe is known to have been in use since at least 200BC and rose to prominence in the Middle Ages. Essentially, it’s an elaborate inclinometer-cum-slide rule, used to measure the altitude above the horizon of a celestial body. It can be used to identify stars or planets, to determine local latitude, to survey, and even determine your horoscope. The arrival, in the 17th-18th centuries, of accurate sextants and reliable portable chronometers rendered the astrolabe obsolete for navigation at sea, but it remains a fascinating and little-understood instrument. This replica, in polished brass, sits in a wooden plinth and stands 18cm tall.

The armillary sphere shows the Earth (a central ball) surrounded by rings (armilla in Latin) which represent the great circles of the heavens. It was widely used during the 17th and 18th centuries in scientific debates over the relative merits of the competing central Earth and central Sun theories. Our simplified, decorative brass versions make handsome ornaments for the desk or garden. Made from solid machines brass with an antique finish.

Everything about this ornament is perfect. The size and colour are as stated/shown in the specifications and the picture. It arrived perfectly packed and when I opened it I was delighted to see it was even better than I had anticipated. Everyone who has seen it it are 'knocked out' by it and say what a beautiful addition to the room and it is so in keeping with the décor of the room. Spitfires remained in service until 1961 – well into the jet age – by which time more than 20,000 had been produced. In tribute, this Spitfire desk sculpture has been cast in solid recycled aluminium and polished to a high sheen such that its subtle curves and angles catch the light.

Aboard HMS Beagle during the Darwin Expeditions of 1831-36, Captain Robert Fitzroy developed and refined the 18th-century storm bottle. This involved much testing and observation of crystal formations and resulted in him being able to make a number of weather predictions with a fair(is) degree of accuracy. Then, as now, no one is quite sure how the storm bottle works. Is it atmospheric pressure, temperature, electrical disturbances? Keep your own records and see if you can confirm or improve upon Fitzroy’s observations.

Our brass pocket sundial is a completely self-contained portable instrument, with a compass for alignment and velvet carry pouch for protection. The gnomon is set for latitudes around 50 degrees North, so will be most accurate in the south of England, northern Europe, Canada and so on. At these latitudes, this is a functioning time indicator (in as much as sundials ever were!) diameter 7cm. Made from chunky solid brass.
