In 1883 Monet moved from the north-west of Paris to Giverny. Adjacent to his property was a small pond which he acquired in 1893, where he created a water garden with an arched bridge in the Japanese style. In 1900 he exhibited a series of ten canvases of the pond, showing a single subject in differing light conditions. He worked on similar series representing poplars, haystacks and the faade of Rouen Cathedral during the same period. The simple design of this painting with the close-up view of the bridge was repeated in several other canvases. The fresh greens of the foliage evoke an early summers day. A leading figure in modern Finnish painting, Gallen-Kallela first worked at Lake Keitele, north of Helsinki, in the summer of 1904. This landscape is his third and most elaborate depiction of the lake, and he exhibited it in Helsinki that same year. The painting is signed with the Swedish form of the artist's name; in later years he used the Finnish form, as above, by which he is best known today. The 98-gun ship Temeraire played a distinguished role in Nelsons victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, after which she was known as the Fighting Temeraire. The ship remained in service until 1838 when she was decommissioned and towed from Sheerness to Rotherhithe to be broken up. The painting was thought to represent the decline of Britain’s naval power. The Temeraire is shown traveling east, away from the sunset, even though Rotherhithe is west of sheerness, but Turners main concern was to evoke a sense of loss, rather than to give an exact recording of the event. The spectacularly colourful setting of the sun draws a parallel with the passing of the old warship. By contrast the new steam-powered tug is smaller and more prosaic. Turner was in his sixties when he painted The Fighting Temeraire. It shows his mastery of painting techniques to suggest sea and sky. Paint laid on thickly is used to render the sun’s rays striking the clouds. By contrast, the ships rigging is meticulously painted. While the specific hillside in Cézanne's native Provence has not been conclusively identified, the wall of angular, jutting rock formations in this painting may represent a quarry, with the cuttings revealing geological strata. Stylistically, the painting relates to landscapes that Cézanne was painting around Aix-en-Provence in the mid-1880s. Cisco Cushions are made with a super soft faux suede and machine washable and comes complete with the cushion pad. This was painted in September 1889, when Van Gogh was in the St-Rmy mental asylum, near Arles, where he was a patient from May 1889 until May 1890. It is one of three almost identical versions of the composition. Another painting of the cypresses (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art) was painted earlier in July 1889 and was probably painted directly in front of the subject. Cisco Cushions are made with a super soft faux suede and machine washable and come complete with the cushion pad. Avril Thomson Smith is a self-taught artist born and raised on the Shetland Islands in Scotland. Avril works from her home studio in Lerwick, where she creates captivating paintings of the Shetland landscape. Childhood playgrounds have been a constant source of inspiration to Avril, who has very fond memories of playing at her Grannies croft on the south mainland of Shetland. Climbing hills, casting peats, building haystacks, and digging up tatties have cemented an appreciation for the old Shetland way of life and instilled a love and appreciation of the remarkable landscape. Shetland croft houses are set in the most stunning locations, some occupied, others sadly abandoned. Each little house is unique and quaint. Avril adores the summer season, where vibrant coloured wildflowers appear all over the island. The combination of colour and the freedom of art has developed into a stunning collection of acrylic croft house artwork which portrays the Shetland Landscape in all its splendour.
