A completely self-contained portable instrument, inspired by a design from the 18th-century instrument maker Peter Dollond, founder of a great Optical empire - the original of which is in the London Science Museum. Instruments like this were once used by explorers and navigators to tell the time anywhere in the world. For this to be possible, The gnomon, which casts the shadow, can be set for latitude on a sliding scale and the whole instrument oriented for direction by means of a magnetic compass in the base. Height adjustable legs ensure that the instrument is used upright.

Stumpy little steam-powered cargo ships like these were once a familiar sight around the West Coast of Scotland, providing an essential supply link ferrying goods and coal around the islands - their flat bottoms allowing them to the beach and unload in places that lacked suitable Piers. Although only a handful remains in service today, they are instantly recognized and much loved thanks largely to the short stories by Neil Munro about Vital spark and her Captain Para handy.

Barrels were used aboard sailing ships to store and preserve provisions, including water, salted meat and (most importantly!) rum. This barrel-style moneybox is made from solid polished hardwood (not plywood or MDF), with brass banding. A screwed flap at the bottom allows access to the precious contents.

Dry needle compass in a pocket watch-style brass case, supplied in a polished hardwood box. Compass diameter 1. 75", length of chain 18". Box measures 3x3x1. 5".

Aboard the HMS Beagle during the darwin expeditions of 1831-36, Captain Robert Fitzroy developed and refined the 18th-century storm bottle. This involved much testing and observation and resulted in him being able to make a number of weather predictions with a fair(ish) degree of accuracy. The point is that then as now, no one is quite sure how the storm bottle works. Is it atmospheric pressure, temperature, electrical disturbances, and it's this element of uncertainty, of almost magical alchemy, that makes these storm bottles so fascinating. Stands 16 cm high on a traditional wooden base and comes with Fitzroy's observations. Will you agree with them or find new interpretations? The mystery's been going on for nearly 180 years. And looks set to continue.

Bluenose was a Canadian fishing and racing schooner from Nova Scotia, built-in 1921. She became a provincial icon for Nova Scotia as well as an important Canadian symbol in the 1930s. The name 'bluenose' originated as a nickname for Nova Scotias from as early as the 18th century. This tribute is nothing short of magnificent. It has a hollow hull, constructed entirely of wood, whilst on deck, there are delightful details such as adjustable rigging blocks, sewn cotton sails, raised gunwales and brass fittings.
