The little-known GPS of Ancient Times. Perhaps the most used multipurpose astronomical instrument in history, the astrolabe is known to have been in use since at least 200BC and rose to prominence in the Middle Ages. Essentially, it’s an elaborate inclinometer-cum-slide rule, used to measure the altitude above the horizon of a celestial body. It can be used to identify stars or planets, to determine local latitude, to survey, and even determine your horoscope. The arrival, in the 17th-18th centuries, of accurate sextants and reliable portable chronometers rendered the astrolabe obsolete for navigation at sea, but it remains a fascinating and little-understood instrument. This replica, in polished brass, sits in a wooden plinth and stands 18cm tall.

This lighted round magnifier evokes the signature style of great literary detective but updates a classic look with a black, ergonomic handle, silver-tone lens frame, and the utility of a super bright LED. This is the largest of round magnifiers, with 2x magnification and the most powerful 6x bifocal, it can handle large-scale projects down to the finest detail. The lens frame projects out on both sides, protecting the lens surface when the magnifier is set down. The crisp, white LED light enhances subtle detail and increases the contrast of text. It is ideal for art aficionados, stamp and coin collectors, readers of maps and manuscripts - in short, anyone who needs to see more than what first meets the eye.

Light has almost magical properties, you’ll see what they mean with this ruler magnifier. It combines the practicality of a ruler and magnifying lens and the simple physics of harnessed natural light. Lay the ruler directly on top of your materials to double the image size. The optical quality lens is specially shaped to gather and direct ambient light to the viewing area. The inch and metric scales are set above and below the magnified viewing zone. Smooth notches at the ruler's end create a comfortable grip and a thin red place-holding line helps with tasks as varied as numbers crunching, checking blueprints, marking sewing patterns, leisure reading, and more.
