Glen Etive sits like a private stanza in the poetry of the Scottish Highlands: a narrow valley shaped by time, where a silver river snakes between steep, heather-clad slopes and ancient rock. This travel poster celebrates that quiet drama - the bend of water, the sweep of valley, the distant summits - and invites you into an atmosphere of gentle exploration and romantic solitude.
The glen's story is written across its landscape. Once a route for drovers and clans, its Gaelic place names and crofting traditions still whisper in the wind. History here is less about monuments and more about lived connection - shepherds guiding flocks across summer shielings, families reading the weather from the same hills for generations, and the old tales that hang in the mist. Glen Etive's closeness to Glencoe and the surrounding munros adds a note of dramatic history and rugged legend to the scene, but this poster keeps the focus on the elemental: land, water and light.
Landscape is the portrait's subject. The river Etive, shown curving through the valley, acts as both a compositional spine and a promise of movement. Hills rise in layered planes of green and brown, their shapes simplified into clean forms that recall classic travel lithographs. The peaks are softened rather than fought, suggesting the slow weathering that has smoothed crags into ridges and gullies. Heather and grass are implied through colour and contour, leaving the imagination to fill in the tactile details.
The poster's aesthetic draws on the golden age of travel art: pared-back shapes, broad colour fields and confident, modern typography. A restrained palette of moss greens, slate blues, warm browns and a hint of heather purple gives the image a timeless feel. Colours are chosen to suggest morning clarity and late-afternoon warmth - the hours when the Highlands feel most intimate and generous.
