When outfitting your patio, back garden or sunroom with outdoor furniture, comfort is top priority. Outdoor cushions are an easy way to add a cosy element to your outdoor seating, but since they come in all shapes and sizes, it can be difficult to know at a glance if the cushions you're swooning over will work on your furniture. Keep reading to learn how to measure your furniture so your new cushions fit perfectly.

Step 1: Determine the Shape

At Wayfair, we offer four main shapes of outdoor cushions - sun lounger, outdoor bench, outdoor dining chairs and armchairs. Figuring out which shape you need is the first step to finding out how to get your exact measurements.

Step 2: Take Measurements

Measure the width and depth of your current patio furniture in order to make your perfect custom cushion. Wayfair offers custom cushions with sizing increments by the inch, so you're sure to have a seamless fit.

Width: This is the left-to-right measurement across the seating surface. Measure at the front edge of the seat frame, between the arms and at the rear (where it meets the back of the chair). Use the widest of these three measurements as the width.

Depth: Measure from the front edge of the seat to the rear, where it meets the chair back. Make sure to take this measurement in the centre of the seat.

Tip: Keep in mind that these definitions can vary depending on what shape of outdoor cushion you're searching for.

Step 3: Pick Your Style

Once you've completed your measurements, you can move on to the best part: deciding what colour and pattern you want for your new cushions. With endless design options, you're sure to create the cushions that fit your space and style.

  • If you're inclined to change up the colour scheme, choose solid cushions in a shade that will stand the test of time and trends.
  • Balance your new cushions with any patterns you already have in your space.
  • Don't be afraid to mix and match colours or patterns when styling cushions. As long as you stick to two coordinating styles to avoid a busy look, mixing it up is part of the fun!
