Head of the table.
With so many different varieties and types of dining tables, we know it can be difficult to determine which one is best for you and your family. We've rounded up our top tips on how to choose a dining table below – whether you're looking for something to gather around every day or on special occasions. Be sure to read our guide below before making your final decision.
How to Choose a Dining Table
If you're in the market for a new dining table, you're most likely looking at the various styles, shapes and price ranges. It's important to choose the highest quality table you can afford; that way it will last for years to come. Did you know that a quality dining table can last up to 10 years and sometimes even longer?
Choosing a Dining Table Size
When choosing a dining table, you need to consider your space and the size of the table. You want to make sure the table fits comfortably in the room, and that each person has the right amount of space, as well as room for additional guests.
We recommend choosing a table that allows each person to have 60cm – 65cm of horizontal space. This allows them to spread out and eat comfortably without bumping elbows. For example, a rectangular table that is 4' long and 3' wide can comfortably seat four people (two on each side).
We also recommend leaving at least 3' of space between the edges of the table and any walls or furniture in the room. This allows for you to comfortably move around to grab another bottle of wine or clear dishes without making anyone move their chairs.
Consider how you use your dining space. Do you just need space for your own family or do you often have dinner guests? If you have a family of four but plan to host occasional dinners with two additional guests, you'll need to account for that space. Instead of the 4' x 3' rectangular table, consider a table that has an additional 30cm of length on each end, and you'll be able to comfortably seat six people. You can also consider an extendable table. These tables often provide a removable or concealed leaf that you can add to instantly add more space to your table.
Tip: Almost all of our dining tables are the standard 70 – 85cm height. Choose dining chairs that are 43cm – 48cm high to give each guest about 30cm between the tops of their legs and the bottom of the tabletop.
Picking a Dining Table Shape
The easiest way to choose the best dining table is to choose a table that is similar to the shape of the room. The most common shapes are rectangular, oval, square and round; see below for more information.
Rectangular & Oval Dining Tables
Rectangular and oval tables fit well in long, narrow spaces. These tables are also great for defining the dining area in an open floor plan. A rectangular table can fit more guests, while an oval table is more space-efficient and traditional. Rectangular and oval tables don't make sense in a square-shaped room, as it can be tricky to maneuver around them in the limited space.
Square & Round Dining Tables
Square and round tables are best for small rooms and for creating an intimate dining space. A round table will take up the least amount of space. Square and round tables won't work in a rectangular room, so only choose this option for square dining rooms.

Pick a Dining Table Type
The base of your dining table is just as important to consider as the shape. While a 5' round table with legs can fit up to four people, a 5' round table with a pedestal can seat up to six people. Read more about the different types of dining tables below.
Leg-Based Dining Tables
Leg-based dining tables are the most common type of table, with four legs near each of the corners of the table.
Pedestal Dining Tables
A pedestal dining table features a round or square tabletop and a sturdy center base. Pedestal tables are great for breakfast nooks and patios because you can easily fit many people around them. Pedestal tables are unique because of the different styles of wood, metal, and stone bases you can find.
Trestle Dining Tables
A trestle dining table has one or more beams or rods (the 'trestles') that support the ends of the table in the center. It is named after a train trestle and is perfect for a rustic or industrial home. Trestle dining tables are usually made of wood or metal.
The best dining tables aren't just determined by style or shape – you need to consider the material as well. Aside from a table that looks great, we know you'll want a material that doesn't require a lot of upkeep over time. Read about our top three dining table materials below, all of which are built to last.
Wooden Dining Tables
A wooden dining table is timeless and welcoming. Each wood table is unique because of the infinite grain possibilities. If your style is traditional or a bit rustic, a wooden table will fit in seamlessly. Wooden dining tables are easy to maintain and repair. Simply clean a wooden table with a water and vinegar mixture and a soft cloth.
Metal Dining Tables
Metal dining tables are very durable and not easily damaged. Their sturdiness and simplicity make them great for farmhouse and industrial styles. The only downside is that the shine on the metal's surface can show fingerprints. Wipe down metal dining tables with a damp cloth to keep them spotless.
Glass Dining Tables
Glass dining tables are a unique choice for modern and traditional homes alike. A glass table can make the space feel more open if your dining room is on the smaller side. Glass dining tables can last for years with proper care. Similar to metal, these tables can quickly show fingerprints. Clean your glass table with a damp cloth and glass cleaning spray.
