What is a Daybed?
Daybeds are known for their attractive and space-conscious design that doubles as both a bed and sofa. Most daybeds are different from typical beds in that the headboard extends along one side of the daybed, rather than just the head of the bed. Daybeds are traditionally the size of a twin bed but can be ordered to fit other mattress sizes, including single, double, queen and king. This gives daybed its unique appearance of half sofa, half bed.
Tip: While a daybed and a sofa bed might appear similar, a sofa bed is actually a sofa with a mattress built in. Sofa beds are sometimes referred to as pullout sofas.
Where Should You Place Your Daybed?
Because of its multifunctionality, a daybed can be placed almost anywhere – including spaces where a full-size bed or sofa wouldn't fit. Daybeds are a great solution for small apartments, studios and for anyone without a guest room as a daybed can live in your lounge or living area. A daybed provides a cosy option for sitting during the day and additional sleeping space for guests to rest at night.
Another popular option is using your daybed as an alternative bed for kids as both kids and older teens will enjoy its uniqueness and ease for lounging with friends. An outdoor daybed is ideal for relaxing in your garden, on your deck or patio or in your conservatory.
Daybeds with Storage
Most daybeds come with additional storage either as shelving or drawers. Make use of this extra space by storing throw pillows and blankets or extra clothing.
If your daybed comes with a trundle, it will have a pullout drawer fit for a mattress that is stored under the bed frame. This type of daybed is perfect for spontaneous sleepovers but be aware that mattresses are often sold separately.
Once you’ve where to place your daybed, you can then start decorating.
Select the Daybed Frame
Just like a bed or sofa, there are a plethora of options to choose from when deciding on a daybed frame. An upholstered fabric frame is one of the most popular choices but a solid wood, wicker or metal frame look great too.
Add Scatter Cushions
Scatter cushions make a great addition to a daybed. The easiest way to decorate your daybed is with a variety of stylish and comfortable cushions, so try to curate your look with different patterns and colours while simultaneously providing a comfortable backrest for sitting guests.
Make It Cosy with Blankets & Throws
Accentuate your cushions and add an extra layer of warmth and style with a blanket or throw. Invest in blankets that are appropriate for all seasons and if you have storage space, keep a your blankets or throw tucked away for guests to use whenever they need.
Invest in a Slipcover
Another easy way to decorate your daybed is by purchasing a slipcover or bedding set. These affordable coverings allow you to redecorate your daybed with ease while protecting your furniture from spills and stains.
