We also sat together with Ailsa to discuss her creative process, what makes her home artistically stimulating and how she'll be spending the Easter holidays.
WF: How is your creative process when taking on a project like this?
AJ: First, I consider what's outlined in the brief and take my own route from there. I've recently came back from Poland where I picked up a lot of little traditional painted Easter eggs. The colours and patterns were amazing, so I knew instantly that I wanted to translate that into something creative. Looking at other Easter card designs, I thought a lot of them were quite sweet but not really my style; these are much more "me". At first, I spent some time just drawing the eggs, and then worked the text around them.
Tip: For the best results, print onto high-quality card rather than plain paper — this will make your Easter cards look professional as well as much more durable.
WF: Do you often work from home? How do you make your living space creatively stimulating?
AJ: As a student I'm pretty limited on my available workspace, but I do have a large desk that's covered with postcards and prints. There's a mixture of things my friends have given me and pieces by artists and illustrators who I admire. It's fairly cluttered, but everything sitting on there is useful, interesting and inspiring. I like to keep a bunch of flowers nearby too if they're affordable — it feels special and brightens up the space. Daffodils are great at this time of year
WF: Do you have a way to really get your creative juices flowing?
AJ: I try and take a break every now and then. I'll either make a cup of tea, take a nap or go for a walk, there's a lot that can be said for taking a little step back. It can be difficult with time and work pressures, but even just a moment outside for a breather can help both clear my head and really re-energise.
WF: Finally, how will you be celebrating the Easter weekend
AJ: This Easter I'll be spending lots of time with my family. Hopefully I'll also have a bit of downtime so I can recharge my batteries between projects.
