Crisp & Cosy Bedding Ideas to try This Autumn

Switch up your bedding in time for fall.

Bedding with striped duvet, pillowcases and blanket.

As we savour those last few drops of summer, it’s time to think ahead to fall and swap our lightweight summer bedding for something warmer. Whether you’re looking to change your duvet or add a knitted blanket, we’ve put together nine ways to transition your bed into the new season. Keep reading below for autumn bedding ideas to get ready for cooler nights ahead.

1. Start With Soft Sheets

Swap your breezy percale sheets for ones made of cotton flannel. Flannel sheets have a tighter weave and a soft, brushed finish that make them ideal for colder weather. Flannel sheets are also cosy, yet breathable and moisture-wicking. They're wrinkle-resistant and have a long life span. For a great all-season option, linen sheets or Egyptian-quality cotton sheets are warm yet breathable enough to prevent feeling overheated during the night. Both linen and Egyptian-quality cotton are soft, durable and can last for years.

2. Bring in a Warm Duvet

For cooler weather, bring in warmer autumn bedding like a down-filled duvet insert. Down is one of the warmest options as the feathers create small pockets of air that retain heat. It’s also incredibly fluffy and light, making your bedding look and feel extra plush. However. if you’re allergic to down, there are alternatives made with hypoallergenic polyester fill that are just as warm and comfortable.

Tip: When shopping for a down-filled duvet, look out for 'fill power' in the product description. Fill power measures the fluffiness (or loft) of the down, with higher fill powers being warmest. All-season duvet inserts range from 400–600 fill power and cold-weather inserts typically have 600–800 fill power.

3. Opt for a Quilt

Quilts are a great, versatile options as they're often reversible and machine-washable. Since quilts are thinner than down duvets, they're ideal for layering with other blankets or as transitional pieces as the seasons change. Need autumnal bedding that's cosy but not quite as heavy as a quilt? Toss a bedspread on your bed instead. Bedspreads are made from a single piece of fabric, while quilts have three separate layers. Bedspreads often have the same quilted design as a traditional quilt, but their warmth level is similar to a blanket.

4. Choose an Autumnal Colour Palette

Use seasonal colours to set the mood. For a rich, autumn palette, choose deep colours such as navy, burnt orange, moss green, burgundy or yellow ochre. Try switching your light-coloured summer duvet cover for one in a darker hue to make your space look even cosier. If you don’t want to change your duvet or quilt, incorporate autumnal shades as accents. Layer warm-toned cushions over neutral bedding for a simple and practical change.

5. Incorporate Patterns

Patterned bedding is an easy way to add texture to autumnal colours and add character to solid tones. We recommend choosing timeless patterns for autumn bedding such as florals, stripes or tartan checks for a classic yet laid-back look. Patterned bedding works well with neutral solid colours but also looks great when mixed with other patterns. For a playful seasonal look, pair floral sheets with a floral duvet cover in different autumnal shades.

6. Add Cosy Textures

One of our most loved ways to transition from summer to autumn bedding is to add texture. Opt for plush textures, such as knitted materials or velvet fabrics, to create an inviting space that evokes warmth. Layering different textiles, such as linen shams with a quilted cotton coverlet or folding a woolen blanket at the end of the bed makes for a thoughtful touch. Choose a thick, knitted blanket or a faux fur throw to maximise hygge.

7. Layer Calming Neutrals

Neutral colours are calm and relaxing, making a toned-down colour palette great for any bedroom. For a autumn-inspired design, go for inviting neutrals, such as tawny beige, soft white and warm gray. Neutral bedding creates a subtle foundation for autumnal-coloured accents. Choose a smooth, light gray comforter for a serene bed. Opt for a cover set that includes cushions to simplify your setup and create a solid base for layering.

8. Refresh Pillows

The start of a new season is a great time to refresh your bedding as well as your pillows. Like the right duvet, supportive pillows are a key part of ensuring a good night’s rest. Experts recommend replacing pillows every year or so, depending on how well a pillow holds its shape. It’s important to consider which position you sleep in and the type of fill you prefer when browsing for new pillows. For side and back sleepers, we recommend a medium or firm comfort level. For stomach sleepers, we recommend a plush comfort level.

9. Update Your Headboard

When changing your bedding for the autumn season, your headboard is another important element that adds style and structure to your bedroom. If you’re looking to update your headboard, go for one that suits your aesthetic. Choose a wooden headboard with a distressed finish for a touch of natural, rustic aesthetic or pick a traditional-style upholstered headboard for extra warmth and comfort. A padded or tufted headboard is perfect if you like to prop yourself up at night and read a book.
