There are quite a few things to consider when decorating and furnishing a toddler and pre-schooler friendly bedroom. As it's their bedroom it's worth considering the room from their perspective and including some child-sized furniture. This makes their room a lot more comfortable for them, plus the ability to use furniture and easy access to play materials helps them become more independent and confident in their actions. Here are a few useful tips in how to decorate kid's bedrooms with their needs in mind.

The Montessori Method
My tips are partly drawn from the Montessori principles. The guiding idea is that when children's play and life are facilitated and made easy, it encourages independence and good behaviour.
Child-sized furniture helps children use the furniture as intended, and encourages them to use it independently. Clearing out toys and only putting select items on display will help children play with a purpose. Hopefully they won't get distracted with too much choice and it makes it easier to put toys away again.
The precise things you need really depend on the room and your own requirements - but here are some ideas we used.
Toddler Sized Chair and Desks
A handy place to read, draw or craft is a great way to encourage creative minds. Plus with pint-sized chairs, parents can be confident that little ones will be sitting comfortably and with their feet on the floor.

- Hang (or use washi tape to attach) artwork on the wall at a lower height than you would do in adult rooms. Using your child's own artwork will make them very proud.

Fun Playful Storage
We used LEGO storage, which in addition to storing small objects can be used to play with. What better way to encourage little ones to tidy up again? It may be worth adding a wardrobe or chest of drawers to house all the other clothing and toys kids seem to accumulate in abundance!
Low-level Storage
This makes it easier for children to take their out toys to play—and put them away again! Cube shelves are ideal as they're not raised by legs.
- Get down on your knees and shuffle along to see the world from a tiny person perspective!
Child-friendly Bookcase
A bookcase that lets little ones see the book covers straight away makes it easier for them to recognise and pick the books he or she wants to read. Plus it can add a great touch of colour to a room, and is easily interchangeable over time too.
- Rotate toys to keep them fresh and exciting to use!

Low Wall Hooks/Hangers
Choosing clothes themselves and putting them away encourages the kids to achieve some independence, and helps them get excited about learning to dress themselves too.
A Play Mat
We chose a play mat with roads and houses, as we thought it would encourage creative play, but any play mat will do. For a more educational take you could choose a play mat with numbers or letters.
