How to Incorporate Boho into your Home

Our Editors give you the skinny on the folksy bohemian trend…

Boho living room

We have long been obsessed with the interiors of other cultures and exotic faraway lands, which explains why the popularity of the bohemian trend never seems to wane. However, each year boho undertakes a modern makeover to transform the look into a more accessible, contemporary style that can be achieved in any home. For 2016, expect lighter, almost pastel colours, lots of clashing prints and cosy, leather armchairs. Read ahead for more tips on how to get this look…

Saturated in Colour

A key component of the boho look is bold, bright colours. This year we've seen more muted tones, such as navy, burnt orange and dark pink but also sugary ice-cream shades such as mint and lilac emerging. Whatever your preferred colours don't be afraid to mix and match—the bohemian style embraces the eclectic look wholeheartedly! Go bold and choose vibrantly painted chests, upholstered accents chairs and eye-catching textiles. If you want a hint of folksy appeal without committing completely, then opt for

smaller accents in clashing colours—cushions, wall art and vases are all perfect for this, and can easily be replaced if you want to refresh your space.

Patchwork Pieces

The artisanal angle is really prominent for boho this year, with the origin and craftsmanship of a piece being championed like never before. Look out for handmade patchwork pieces (whether they be armchairs, pouffes or rugs) including suzani, kantha or kilim designs—weaves originating from across the globe including Tajikistan, Turkey and South-East Asia. The best part about the bohemian style is that you can take inspiration from anywhere in the world, without needing to stay true to that one particular look—again, clashing is not only acceptable but encouraged. If you're worried that your home will start to resemble a Moroccan souk, then opt for one of two focal point pieces in patchwork and keep the rest of the room neutral with sandy tones and natural woods.

Brown is Back

The 70s are having a huge influence across both fashion and interiors this year, which means that browns, earthy oranges and dusky greens are making a comeback. Look out for floral designs in these shades if you're a fan. Alongside this, natural materials such as weathered wood and leather are everywhere—and also happen to be the perfect complement to boho décor. Acting as a neutraliser, plenty of wooden tables, shelves and chairs work to tone down the bright colours, while a classic leather armchair or sofa helps to achieve that coveted balance of cultured yet cosy.
