Launching in 2011 by founder and editor Caroline Rowland, 91 Magazine is a unique anthology of everything creative. Aiming to showcase exquisite yet attainable homes, modern trend-savvy DIYs and the most exciting new boutiques and designers, 91 Magazine is a wonderful combination of easy tips and tricks alongside a delightful amount of interior snooping.
Highlights from the Spring/Summer 2016 edition include a fascinating behind-the-scenes profile of homewares designer Sian Zeng, who first catapulted to interior stardom when her woodland-inspired magnetic wallpaper caught the eye of a designer who was commissioned to decorate the nursery of Hollywood actress Hilary Duff. The Instagram Edit profiles a collection of fresh, aspirational accounts while the Home Tours had our Editors oohing and aahing. Expect everything from sneak-peeks into restaurants, recipes using seasonal ingredients and oodles of inspirational blogs, creative spaces and DIYS to sink your teeth into.
Besotted with the publication, our Editors tracked down Caroline herself to pick her brain and find out some more about 91 Magazine…
What inspired you to start 91 Magazine?
I’ve worked in photography and publishing for quite a few years, and have always loved magazines, but I had become disappointed with the mainstream offering, particularly in the interiors and craft market. I felt there was the chance to produce a magazine which offered readers achievable ideas and inspiration that was also super stylish. I wanted every page to be beautiful, as photography and design is really important to me, and I wanted it to be a magazine that people wanted to read cover to cover, not quickly flick through. Going by the feedback we’ve received, it seems we have managed to achieve this!
What’s the most exciting thing that’s come out of creating 91 magazine?

For me, it’s all about collaboration. I love working with all of our contributors. We have so many talented writers, photographers and stylists working with us to create the content. I love brainstorming ideas, and then I adore seeing the shoots and reading the features when they come in. We’re also starting to collaborate with like-minded brands too which is really exciting.
How do you go about finding out about the hottest new designers/bloggers/trends—where do you source your inspiration?
The World Wide Web is a wonderful place! There is infinite inspiration everywhere, whether it’s Instagram, Pinterest, blogs, podcasts… Our team are constantly immersed in the creative community on and off line, so we all bring our knowledge and ideas together which is great.
What is your favourite section in your Spring/Summer 2016 magazine edition and why?
That’s an impossible question for me to answer! I love it all; otherwise I wouldn’t put it in there. For me as an editor, it’s all about getting a perfect balance—so shorter reads, longer reads and a good mix of the topics we cover is what makes it an overall, well-rounded product, so it’s too difficult to pick out what I like the most.

What trends do you see emerging for the upcoming autumn/winter?
To be honest, I don’t think we are massively trend driven at 91 Magazine, and we don’t claim to be trend predictors. For me personally, I am loving clean Scandinavian-style spaces, mixed with rustic woods and cosy textiles, but added elements of playfulness and colour via illustrated artwork and decorative objects.
If you could have one new piece of furniture in your home right now, what would it be and why?
Anything with good storage! Even though I’ve done a bit of clearing out recently, storage always seems to be an issue. I think this is usually the case in most homes. A large cupboard with lots of shelving inside would be really useful!
