Cot Dimensions: How to Pick the Right Cot Size
The perfect-sized cot for your new addition.
Cots are the core of any nursery: They're large, costly and important to your baby's well-being, so don't guess when it comes to cot size. Read our guide to learn exact cot dimensions – so you can get it right the first time.
Standard Cot Size
A standard cot size is 60 x 120cm. Standard cots are traditional in both style and design. They're intended to comfortably fit your child during the first 18–24 months of their life. Although standard cots can be on the pricey side, they 're long-lasting, which adds to their great value. Some standard cots are even designed to transform into a toddler bed as your child grows. These convertible cots typically include additional parts that help the cot transition into a new, larger sleeping space. The size of your nursery will affect the cot dimensions you choose. Due to their dimensions, standard cots are optimal in larger rooms and spaces. They will thrive in open-layout nurseries or in the centre of a spare room. Mini Cot Size
A mini cot size is 50 x 100cm. Sometimes interchangeably known as portable cots, mini cots are an excellent alternative to the larger standard option. Their smaller size makes them great for tight or limited spaces. They are very lightweight, and some can be easily folded up, wheeled into a corner, or packed away for travel or other extended stays. Mini cots are also more affordable. These are an excellent choice for homes without a separate nursery room or for nurseries that serve multiple purposes. Due to their smaller size, mini cots won’t fit your child as long as a standard cot will. Monitor your child's growth to ensure that they can still comfortably stretch and sleep in the cot.
Cot Mattress Size
The standard cot mattress size is 60 x 120cm. The mattress is typically 5 – 10cm thick and should not be thicker than 15cm. For safety reasons, there should be no gaps larger than two fingers wide between the mattress and the cot. The typical mattress size for a mini cot is 50 x 100cm. The thickness tends to be lower, around 2 – 4cm high and no higher than 5cm.
