It creates a softer light if you angle the lamp up towards the ceiling, otherwise the light was a bit harsh and it made shadows. It looks great and seems very sturdy with a good heavy base. It's not quite as tall as I expected, but I suppose I should have checked the measurements! It's great for reading under (if a bit hot after a while). The range of adjustments available isn't as as much as I would like - the picture on the website is as high as it goes - it would be better for me if I could tilt it higher (which ties in with it overall not being as tall as I'd like) as I'd like to move it a bit more out of the way when not actually using it. If it were taller/tilted more I would give this 5 stars as it seems very sturdy and looks great. It arrived in a small box as you have to screw in all together yourself (which was easy once I realised that you have to remove the little black plastic pieces !). Exactly what I was looking for, to brighten a dark corner in the kitchen without being too much. I went for the smoke coloured glass to temper the brightness and it works perfectly - an ambient, warm light that even makes the room feel a little warmer! (All psychological I guess). I love the fact that the base is rectangular - rather than round - so it fits snuggly into the corner. The power cable also comes out of the base so there's no cabling visible around the pole.
